I don't think he looked too gassed at least that early, but that and his low work rate it definitely needs attention on to improve.
What stood out and made it seem worse was he seemed to accept the pace and that he was the bully with power in there. It lead him to take it easy at times fearless to any harm from Trout.
The open cards after the 4th and 8th rounds had an impact as-well. If those cards would have hypothetically read even score cards, I think he'd have been less content with his work rate and let his hands go a bit more. Whether even upping by an average of 10 punches a round would see him seriously gassed by the championship rounds, I don't sense he would pushed to that intensity. Could be wrong, if so, Floyd handles him easier than first thought.
