If you have a regular title, you get to call yourself world champ, and HBO does, at their leisure. Same with interim, but this has some justification. For the most part it's the regular champs doing the work (Trout, GGG, Gamboa at 126) and super champs being a sideshow (Floyd at 154, Sturm, Chris John!)
Golovkin-Macklin getting close to getting done for June 29th

What good did their regular belts do for them? It took Trout 3 years to get a decent fight and payday with his regular belt. Trout getting the Cotto shot had more to do with Al Haymon than the belt, despite what Cotto might have said publicly. I remember lots of fighters in the past chastised Trout for only having the regular belt and gave that as a reason for not fighting him. Exact same thing happened with Golovkin and his regular belt. I remember some interviews with Geale and Barker where they said they did not care for Golovkin's belt and wanted Sturm's belt. And I believe them because they were willing to fight Pirog, who was equally high risk and low reward, because he was the full WBO champion. If you have a regular title, you get to call yourself world champ, and HBO does, at their leisure. I don't think I have to talk about Gamboa's crappy career as the regular champion.
EDIT: Nicholas Walters now currently has the regular WBA belt. Don't know good that's doing for him.Last edited by DoktorSleepless; 04-03-2013, 01:29 AM.Comment

Gamboa immediately did what John failed this whole time, unified the belt. John hasn't fought a PDL caliber guy since JMM. Maybe that was at 127, big deal. Even Barros and Solis beat 90+% most of John comp. As far as HBO was concerned, Gamboa was champion enough at 126.What good did their regular belts do for them? Similarly if Macklin had taken the risk and beat GGG, the regular belt would have immediately become the real belt, since Max would often remind you Mack was robbed by Sturm, plus Sturm shamelessly ducked the guy Macklin exposed.Comment

You might have point there about Gombaa, but the fact is Chris John was still the one making the most out of the two. And I don't think anything is going on Nicholas Walker, the current regular WBA champ.Gamboa immediately did what John failed this whole time, unified the belt. EDIT: Gamboa actually did not unify. He missed the second weign in for the IBF so he didnt get a shot at it.
Max constantly puts down sanctioning bodies and talks about Martinez being THE champion. It's impossible for Macklin to get the same rep as Gamboa as long as Martinez is around. In the middleweight division, belts actually matter a lot less because it's one of the few divisions with a universally recognized lineal champ. Regardless, fighters still want to be a world champion even on paper. But there's solid evidence that they wanted Sturm's belt, not Golovkin's belt. And belts only matter as much as they bring leverage, which Golovkin's belt didn't bring in the opinion of promoters and the fighters themselves. Same **** happened to Trout.
Both Trout and Golovkin have been dissatisfied being the regular champion for a reason. They definitely were not happy with there being another champion in in the same sanctioning body. I specifically recall Trout sounding kind of bitter and defensive about other fighters not recognizing his belt in some radio interview. I know Cabello was also mad about about being the regular WBA champ at 126 for a while.Last edited by DoktorSleepless; 04-03-2013, 02:08 AM.Comment

I'm sure the regular belt is a huge boon to Walters, check out his interview on maxboxing. He's an instant celeb in Jamaica. You might have point there about Gombaa, but the fact is Chris John was still the one making the most out of the two. Gamboa not unifying is not even the point. It's that the "jr" titlist took the risks, and was treated as proper champ by the network for it.
As you noted, neither of those guys had the promotional or network backing. Macklin is with a favored promoter (#1 at middle), and had he stepped up for that unenviable task, he'd have HBO on his side for a while, especially with his decent upside at the gate.Comment

Sources tell me that the GGG-Macklin fight is getting closer and closer to the goal-line for June 29th on the Tri-State area.... #boxing

Also, GGG-Macklin, could be an HBO 3-header with the likes of Thomas Oosthuizen and Willie Nelson underneath #boxing

Good stuff.
I like Macklin and he's always up for a fight. I do fear his style will be a problem against GGG, but he's certainly a legit opponent.Comment
