let's be real. whether it backfires or not, it's still a cynical ploy to make Broner look like more of a weight division hopping worldbeater than he really is.
'look, he jumped up two weight classes to win a world title at welterweight against a bigger man, hail the prodigy!'
just don't mention that the 'bigger man' is quite past his best and famously featherfisted.
that said, the main reason i don't like the fight is that it makes. no. sense.
i'd rather see Broner develop logically. ie. navigate lightweight and 140 with good matchups against the other titlists or top contenders in those weight classes.Last edited by S. Saddler 1310; 03-12-2013, 04:04 AM.Comment

Paulie looked simply awful in his last fight. I fully expect Broner to take the opportunity to fight a well known guy on the decline. I think it could be a decent match, but Broner will be praised for a meaningless victory in the same way Alvarez has been in the last couple years.Comment

People slay me sometimes i feel like im in the matrix reading this board. Is it just me or is ww the division with the biggest grossing in the game? 3 $ making dons r there and they are all old as ****, w no certain replacement atop the boxing stratosphere. Broner will beat Paulie then look 4 one of these paydays b4 they retire bc even.if he loses, they'll b gone soon anyway. As a business man would u like 2 fight jmm or abril? Pac or matthysse? Money may or vasquez? Cmon son these are like at least 5 fold paydays at least be realisticComment

Malignaggi is a 140 fighter, lets be honest. He's also a soft puncher and likely gets schooled by a ton of the 140 guys.
140 is a heavy division, packed with tough fights for Broner.
He skipped it to cherry pick the weakest punching 140lb fighter who just happens to hold a belt at 147.
He deserves a little credit as it's a move up, but lets not act like he's fighting a real welter like Ortiz, Berto or Mayweather, guys that fit the division physically, because Paulie as I already said is a 140lb fighter with featherfists. It's a cherry pick. It's a fools marketing gold, that GBP and HBO are in together, they want the next multi division champion to replace Mayweather & Pacquiao. Broner could be that guy, but he needs to prove himself in the ring, against guys we all respect him for beating, not be a ready made star in the marketing room planning meetings.Last edited by chav; 03-12-2013, 06:55 AM.Comment

It's not a bad fight at all.
Malignaggi is a bit faded, but he has the experience of fighting some if the best and he's still a very good boxer. It will be competitive, with Broner likely winning by decision. I'll be impressed if he stops Paulie, who has always been durable.Comment

If he stays at 140 or 147 and fight top quality opponent i have no problem with the Malignaggi fight.
If he's treating it like Pac treated Margarito i have a huge problem.Comment

It's a nonsense fight, a fight that sums up a lot of the problems in the sport. Adrien Broner should not be fighting for a welterweight title. It's a business move to gift a hyped up young fighter with another marketing angle, and it makes no sense in boxing terms at all.
If you're a boxing fan you just have to ask why Broner? Why not so many other guys at 147 and 140 who would have way more of a claim to a shot at that belt? No one was interested in seeing Adrien Broner and Paulie Malignaggi fight each other. It's a fight that offers no value to anyone except Broner's PR team.
Broner looks to be an excellent talent, but this is exactly the sort of bullshit matchmaking that messes up the sport. People like fighters to earn their shots at titles. There's nothing unreasonable about that.Comment
