i think burns is being brought here as an opponent. he doesn't have a lot to offer world class fighters other than that. GBP certainly isn't bringing him here to turn him into the next ricky hatton.
Golden Boy approach to sign Ricky Burns

He also lost to Briedis Prescott and almost got KO'd against Marcos Maidana.
It was clear that putting him in with punchers wasn't a good idea. Yet that's precisely what GBP did after sending him to DC to get robbed. Good work on their behalf in your view?
Khan wanted a rematch with Peterson this spring but did GBP get it done for him? no they're putting Peterson in with Matthysse in a bout in which Peterson surely makes less money than he would v Khan.
They were saying it's too soon because Khan's in the midst of changing his boxing style under a new trainer in order to protect his chin so can he can improve for the future.I see people saying on a potential fight with Joseito Lopez "Don't match them up, it's too soon" I'm sorry, if Khan can't beat Joseito Lopez then he may aswell hang them up now.
Burns is in a different situation to Khan granted, but I think a British promoter would have more vested in him than GBP with their huge stable of fighters.Comment

I agree. I cannot see where Matchroom would take him? He would fight ree's for a start then he would fight a few bums and avoid Broner. Just the same situation as with FW. Atleast with GOlden Boy he would have a chance of fighting Broner but even if he loses he always stands the chance to fight some other premier 140's ala Khan (Would be a huge fight in the Uk) plus all the others like LM, DG, LP etc
With matchroom he would be in the same boat as FWComment

At the end of the day. Do you expect GBP to avoid any decent fighter who can punch? THese are world champion fighters, you cannot expect Khan and GBP to pick and choose fights where Khan could be hurt. Not to mention around 140 there are some guys who hit like mack trucks and if Khan is/was a champ then he would eventually have to fight them.He also lost to Briedis Prescott and almost got KO'd against Marcos Maidana.

I highly doubt GBP set up that robbery. I don't think it was a robbery personally but let's say it was, why would GBP set that up? Doesn't make sense. He also lost to Briedis Prescott and almost got KO'd against Marcos Maidana.

You can't just keep fighters away from punchers. At the top of any division the majority of fighters will have some pop. Like I said, before the Garcia fight most people were saying Garcia isn't even a puncher although it was clear to me he was.
Khan got through the fight with Maidana and in his words "Proved he can take a punch" he wanted to big fights and GBP provided them.
I'm not sure the in and outs of that situation with Peterson, I'm not sure why they didn't make that fight. I think they wanted to make Khan-Lopez which in my mind is a perfect fight for Khan.Comment

you can't keep putting the guy in with the salita's and the kotelnik's of the world, the way frank warren did.
GBP matched him with maglinaggi and mccloskey. peterson's not a huge puncher either, and neither is judah.
if they were to go that rout, and keep him away from top fighters, they'd have been better off in the UK. and then he'd be better off with a domestic promotor, because that's not what goldenboy does.
khan's problem isn't matchmaking. it's his chin.Comment

I wasn't suggesting they did. But should the fight have been there in first place? Why should Khan the champion and bigger draw have fought in Peterson's backyard?
Top of the division around that time was Bradley I believe, who like Peterson isn't a huge puncher. You can't just keep fighters away from punchers. At the top of any division the majority of fighters will have some pop.
Perhaps but promoters aren't 'most people', they're expected to do due diligence.Like I said, before the Garcia fight most people were saying Garcia isn't even a puncher although it was clear to me he was.
Anyway, I've given my views on this and will leave it there.
I don't believe GBP did a particularly good job for Khan and I understand Burns is in a different situation but I think another British promoter (not named Warren) would be a better move for him.Comment

Exactly. They were gearing Khan up for a May showdown with Floyd Mayweather, for ****s sake.
Oscar has a soft spot for prettyboy boxers like Khan and Ortiz, he thinks he can turn 'em all into De La Hoyas. GB would never set Khan up to be robbed against a fighter with no fans like Peterson.
They were trying to turn Khan into a star in America, yeah? They had him fight in NYC against Paulie, fight in Vegas. The fight in DC was the part of promoting the brand of Amir Khan. Beating Peterson, the #1 contender, in front of his home crowd would have made Khan look like a boss, but it all went to ****.Last edited by paulf; 03-08-2013, 09:03 AM.Comment

I disagree. His problem is his flaws that leave his chin exposed. For someone with his type of chin he shouldn't fight the way he does. He tries too hard to impress.Originally posted by New EnglandQuote:
