Golden Boy approach to sign Ricky Burns

Golden Boy Promotions make approach to WBO champion Ricky Burns

Ricky Burns has been approached by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and the promoter is keen to sign up the WBO lightweight champion.

Burns split with Frank Warren earlier this week following the collapse of a third consecutive fight. A planned title unification fight with IBF champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16 fell through after the Mexican announced he had suffered a viral infection and would not be fit.

The cancellation left Burns' camp extremely unhappy and his manager accused Warren of being "disrespectful" before ending their partnership.

STV has learned that Burns has had several offers to promote his next fight, with the UK wing of Golden Boy having expressed an interest in adding him to their roster of fighters.

London-based Johnny Eames is also an interested party. The promoter’s Showtime Sports Events is understood to have made an enquiry to Burns’ camp.

When STV contacted Burns’ manager Alex Morrison, he said that he was still mulling over offers and would make a decision shortly.

“We are very happy with our fresh start,” Morrison said. “We are considering options and hope to make an announcement within a week.”

Burns was last in the ring when he successfully defended his title against Kevin Mitchell in September. Since then, planned fights against Liam Walsh, Jose Ocampo and Vazquez have all fallen through at short notice.

I hope he doesn't sign with them, I don't think they'd have the interests of his career at heart. They matched Khan poorly and got him robbed and knocked out. They got Matthysse robbed twice too.

I would like to see him end up at Matchroom and to solidify the Skysports fights rather then just end up fighting on HBO...plus I would love to see Hearn stick another one on fish-eyes and im pretty sure Sky would be happy to see that happen to stick one on Boxnation.

they certainly miscalculated on matching him with Peterson in DC (it was the choice of venue that screwed him, more than poor matching), but how was Khan matched badly with Garcia? they put him in a legit fight that he was still heavily favoured to win, and in a neutral location. how is that matching him poorly? who should they have matched him with?

GBP have shown ambition to develop internationally. i think they'd have some genuine long-term intentions in signing Burns. it would be up to him to make the most of opportunities, ofc.

It's the promoters fault Khan got slept by Garcia? Most people were giving Garcia a puncher's chance at best(Granted a puncher's chance against Khan is a helluva chance).

Khan is a pretty worn "prospect"(If that's even applicable at this point). He is what he is. Why would you still be protecting him like he's an 18 year old kid?

Someone with less one-punch power (yes, as a promoter I would protect Khan). At the time Khan was said to have been one fight from a Mayweather shot, the Garcia ruined it for him.

            Like Briedis Prescott, yes?

            (a) Because he was on the verge of securing Mayweather
            (b) He can't take a flush punch from a ****er, as a promoter of course he should be protected.

GBP don't care, instead they created a new star in Garcia. British promoters have more to lose.

Imo they'll sign Burns to match him with Broner and then as a foreign fighter not really gaf about his career.

anytime he fights in america on a american station like showtime or hbo, lol, he will lose because of the horrible decisions given to foreigners against american boxers, lol, williams, broner, judah, bradley, peterson , and many others have all gotten too many gifts against people from other countries, americans want to see americans win on american television, lol, dont blame anybody from any other nation doing the same but ricky burns might be winning a 12 rounder and win all 12 and still lose, williams lara and bradley pacquiao come to mind, every country is biased but here im america, we are the most biased of all, burns is better off signing with goldenboy but fighting in europe only, lol, at least he wont get robbed over there(maybe he might)

the klitchkos get insulted every time like if they sukk cuz they dominate the americans today, its not there fault we as americans sukk balls against the klits, arrerola was left crying

Garica was considered to be a routine easy defense though. No one saw the KO coming.

A lot of people were saying Garcia wasn't a hard puncher in the build up to the fight too

To be honest I think they matched Khan quite well.

As for Burns, I'm surprised. If he signs with GBP then he'll obviously get the Broner fight sharpish.

I think I'd rather him go to Matchroom though.

"Reckless" matchmaking is what the sport needs.

Sorry but you don't have to be careful with a 30 year old with 37 fights.

Please stop making excuses for Khan. This is boxing, you can't face feather fisted fighters all the time. Its not GB's fault that Khan doesn't use his stools and has his flaws.
