I believe that whoever wrote this article is understandibly frustrated. I myself can see where she is coming from. I have lived in Puerto Rico and was born and raised there and have noticed a great difference in the Boricuas de la isla and the Boricuas raised here. The main difference is that Puerto Ricans from the island or ones fresh off the boat do not need to brag about their identity because they are secure and proud of what they are. They range from white to black to brown and some even have chinese heritage, but despite those big differences they have no racism down there because we are all Boricua. Ricans up here drop their jaws as soon as they find out that my uncle is Puerto Rican since he looks like a straight up African or that my cousin is Rican because he looks like a straight up Russian! They think we are all brown! Ricans up here in the states tend to loose their culture, and many times it's not their fault, due to many family generations already living in America. It makes me really mad when all Boricuas here talk about is 50 cent, Jay-Z, etc and they don't even know what is bomba, plena, rumba, holandes, oriza, guaguanco, aguinaldo, trovador, cuatro, not even salsa at times! and many other Puerto Rican national symbols. I know some White-Americans that know more than Ricans themselves about our culture. Boricuas over here don't even bother to speak at least a little spanish while Americans from the states yearn to learn the language so they can study in the University of Puerto Rico because of it's outstanding educational programs, and trust me I know alot. I understand that having any kind of national day parade is nice and something to be proud of and to unite, but when it becomes about getting drunk, making a fool of yourself and making our nation look bad then it is degrading. If you want people to respect you as a Puerto Rican you must not only respect them, but also respect yourself.

Wow..I agree with you, Its not all PR's in the states are like that but yes alot of them are. They dont really know the culture and 1/2 of them cant speak spanish..becuase there like 3rd gen im 2nd gen and im also 1/2 Italian well more like 1/4 Italian becuase my mother was born in PR and my father is PR. I am born and raised in Puerto Rico. I never met my great grandfather, but I heard he was a true Spanish descendant.
