Did Floyd "retire" in 2007 because he was shook by the 147 division heating up?

Cotto and Margarito would have been fantastic fights/events, especially around that period. 2008 Cotto vs Floyd would have been crazy. That's why I found the Cotto v Floyd fight at 154 frustrating, because it could have been so much more meaningful at one point.

As for the topic in hand - I'm a Mayweather hater but I think the retirement looks worse in retrospect than it was at the time. Now we can look back and i looks like these guys beat the prime out of each other, and then Floyd came back once everything cleared. I dunno. I think he genuinely felt burn out from boxing - DLH/Hatton were gigantic back-to-back events and money makers. He probably lost some motivation at that point.

Floyd couldn't even make the catchweight of 145.

Floyd was a welterweight in 2009. JMM was a lightweight at that time.

Marquez was a featherweight until his mid-30s
I asked what was your point. and of course you don't have one

the floyd vs marquez fight was not set at a catchweight. any fight over 140 is a welter weight fight.

marquez called out floyd who was a welterweight don't call out a welterweight unless you expect to fight one..

and everyone knows it is harder to lose weight then gain it..

Margarito called out Floyd so has Guerrero, Pacquiao in his prime and Canelo Alverez and I didn't see Floyd respond. He was a stuttering idiot when Margarito faced him face to face about fighting him.

What I dont get is why all the lovefest for Margarito. He was a draw for about 5 seconds after he beat Cotto, but Mosley ended that run quick. Hes never been anything but a punching bag. Hes never beaten a top level fighter in his carreer, discounting Cotto for obvious reasons. The dude hasnt won one single round since getting busted with the illegal handwraps. Yet people actually accuse Floyd of being scared of this bum.

My theory is this has everything to do with Floyd and nothing to do with Margarito. Margarito is a pawn in a chess game to diminish Floyds accoplishments. Margarito, Berto, and Alexander are all HBO hypejobs that have never beaten an elite fighter between the three of them. The only difference between Margarito and the other two is Margarito called Floyd out to his face. It has nothing to do with Margaritos boxing ability, or lack there of. If Berto wouldve called Floyd out years ago and they didnt fight for whatever reason people would be making threads talking about "Would Floyd be an ATG if he had beaten Berto?" LoL. Margarito, Berto, and Alexander all have the same resume. They look great against average competition but struggle, in some cases looked horrible, against the elite fighters in their divisions.

Both would have been extraordinary events. But quite honestly, I just don't think much about the skill level of both of these fighters. Solid fighters, big hearts, tough, loyal fans, always bring excitement to the ring but as far as skill level is concerned, I never considered either of them elite.

Like I said earlier. These would have been good wins for Floyd but would have zero impact on his career from a historical perspective. Wins would not have placed him among the greatest welterweights of all time. I don't think anybody he's been accused of "ducking" would except maybe Pacquiao. The talent at 147 has never been high enough to the point where he could put together a resume similar to the likes of Robinson, Armstrong and Leonard.
