If we take Pacquiao out of the picture, Morales's resume is a tad better than Marquez's. Although I do consider Marquez a better more complete fighter, specially in his prime.
If we put Pacquiao back into the picture. Marquez going up in weight at almost 40 to knock out his arch rival who was consider the #1 or #2 P4P and ATG is a better achievement than not only anything Morales has done but it would be hard for any Mexican fighter to match it.
We need to take some factors into consideration like the fact that Morales built 90% of his career in his 20's as oppose to Marquez who built his entire career in his 30's. Infact he fought Pacquiao for the first time in his 30's. He became champ for the first time the same year he turned 30.
After he turned 30 was he won titles in 4 weight classes not including WW.
After he turned 30 he fought for the Ring/Lineal Championship 3 times and became the oldest Lightweight champion in history. While unifying in multiple weight classes
when we step back and realize what he was doing when the majority of other fighters were going down hill or were shot like Barrera, Morales and most other fighters it does speak to how great Marquez really is.Comment

Well, there a million boxers who, if they retired at the perfect time, would be considered greater than they are. It rarely ever happens though and using possible scenarios and comparing those to current scenarios doesn't really work. Morales did lose to Raheem badly between Pac fights and did lose to Diaz at 135, just like people will bring up the loss against Mayweather and Pac for Marquez.
Anyway, as it stands right now, I'd have to go with Marquez by a shade.
A lot of people like to say Marquez' resume isn't as good as Morales' but its easily as good now and has always been more solid, even before the Pac win, than most give him credit for.
He's the oldest lineal lightweight champion in history, a fact I only recently found out. That is impressive. He should have just won the WBO 147 title off Pac and been a legitimate 4 division champ, the first true 4 division Mexican champ ever...rather than been literally given a title. But that didn't happen. Either way, Morales' two bests wins, Pac and Barrera, are also on Marquez' resume.
After that, it's pick and choose. 40 year old champ Zaragoza or 37 year lineal champ Casamayor? Unified champ Diaz or Barrera beater Jones? Old Ayala or prime Salido? Peden or Jesus Chavez? On and on....
I've gotta go with Marquez.Last edited by BennyST; 12-18-2012, 10:08 AM.Comment
