Gamboa, who is moving up to junior lightweight after being stripped of a pair of featherweight belts, was originally slated to face Mexico's Miguel Beltran Jr. for a vacant interim title. However, Beltran (27-2, 17 KOs) was in a brutally tough fight on Sept. 15, losing a split decision in an all-action battle with Roman Martinez for a vacant world title on the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard.

"He was just physically not ready to go back in the gym after such a grueling match with Martinez," (Top Rank vice president Carl) Moretti said. "It was too soon of a turnaround."

After Beltran dropped out, Moretti said numerous names were discussed as an opponent for Gamboa, including Edner Cherry and Rene Gonzalez.

"We've been through a 100 names and a bunch of guys turned it down too," Moretti said.

They finally agreed on Farenas, who is with Pacquiao's MP Promotions and was going to be on the undercard anyway.

"Once Miguel Beltran fell out, the quest for an opponent began and the fact that (Farenas) was already on the card and he's a Filipino brought some natural cache to it," Moretti said.
Why do you bother? Notice how he was ignored by the following 2 posts? He probably didnt even know who Beltran was before the Rocky fight. All he knows is that he's Mexican therefore he feels the need to "support" him. Shame cause people like this dude is what's making me despite the Mexican fan base. On paper it seems like Farena is the better opponent out of those (excluding Beltran).

With Broner gone from 130, Gamboa is gonna cut through that division like a hot knife through butter. Junior lightweight has been weak for a while now. Yuri will pick up a belt or two and move on to 135, possibly en route to a showdown with "The Problem".

I still say Gamboa beats Broner. I really would like to see Gamboa fight Uchiyama at 130, would be a great fight, but obviously not holding my breath.

If 50 moves him right, he's P4P top 10 by this time next year or early 2014.
Oh they already are after 50 mentioned his name next to Floyd's. I posted a thread about how people who didn't know Gamboa were saying "Floyd is about to fight this guy (Gamboa)." I just had to laugh.

That's brilliant then, because anyone following the sport knew that wasn't gonna happen. Pretty smart on 50's part, didn't know it caught wind like that.

I see Gamboa-Broner playing out like Pacquiao-Mayweather. The current feud might stop this from happening.

I don't think Gamboa is afraid to travel and fight over there. If anything, his promoters might be the ones who prevent him from traveling. But 50 being an international star and Gamboa being his fighter, it SHOULD draw MAJOR numbers in Japan.

Yea, it was a PR dude as a matter of fact who is just a casual. He just knows people like Floyd and of course Cotto. So him not knowing Gamboa and possibly not knowing about the size difference bought into it and got him talking.

I think so, too. But I have to admit, after Broner's last outing, I'm a little concerned. lol

I think Yuri will fight a couple of the top dogs at 130. There really isn't much interest in that division. I would imagine that a champ or two would like a crack at a name like Gamboa. I don't see why Uchiyama wouldn't jump at the chance. I'd love to know who were the guys Moretti was talking about that turned down a fight with Yuri.

Abril is still going to fight Bogere when their fight is rescheduled, so he's booked. I also don't think Gamboa would be keen on fighting his countryman.
