Former featherweight titleholder Yuriorkis Gamboa will face southpaw Filipino Michael Farenas on the undercard of the HBO-Pay Per View-televised fourth bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on Dec. 8, according to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.

The matchup between Gamboa (21-0, 16 knockouts), who is 30, and Farenas (34-3-4, 26 KOs), who is 28, is part of an already stacked card that will happen at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Farenas was also confirmed as Gamboa's opponent by attorney Leon Margules, who represents Gamboa's promoter, rapper 50 Cent (aka, Curtis Jackson), of SMS Promotions.

The lineup also includes bouts between Mexican IBF lightweight titleholder Miguel Vazquez and undefeated southpaw Mercito Gesta, as well as a clash of unbeaten featherweights Javier Fortuna and Patrick Hyland.

"It's going to be a great night for the Filipino boxing fans, not only with Pacquiao, but now, with Gesta and Farenas," said Arum, who also has Filipino-American junior featherweight champion Nonito Donaire making an HBO-televised Dec. 15 defense opposite Jorge Arce.

"A week later, we have Nonito Donaire. So they're becoming one of the most important countries for boxing in the entire world."

Last November, Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs) won an unpopular and highly-disputed majority decision over Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs), who has also battled Pacquiao to a draw and suffered a split-decision loss. Pacquiao is coming off a controversial split-decision loss to Tim Bradley which dethroned him as WBO welterweight beltholder in June.

A Cuban Olympic gold medalist, Gamboa has not been in the ring since last September, when he decisioned current WBC featherweight beltholder Daniel Ponce de Leon.

Farenas is 7-0-1, with two stoppage victories since falling by unanimous decision to Marlon Aguilar in May of 2010.

Vazquez (32-3, 13 KOs), who defended his belt via split-decision over Marvin Quintero last month, will make a the fifth defense of his belt against Gesta (26-0-1, 14 KOs), and Fortuna (20-0, 15 KOs) will pursue his third straight knockout against Hyland (27-0, 12 KOs).

Gamboa seriously needs to get a decent fight after this one.

I wanted Beltran. That would've put Gamboa right back in the discussion for a title shot, but with the layoff, maybe this is best. Don't really know Farenas either, checked his resume and he last fought Toshiaki Uchiyama to a 3 round TD. He's beat Daniel Attah, Fernando Beltran, and Walter Estrada. Those are the only three I recognized.

Umm I just watched :30 seconds of the first round and it was enough . The way this guy bends/leaps forward as he comes in all opened is a KO waiting to happen. Not sure how good his chin is tho.

Beltran is a tough ass dude and might've been a dangerous fight for Gamboa coming off of a 1+ year layoff but I thought it was a very winnable fight. Would've made some major noise too with that win.

Made to order for a Gamboa KO. He lunges with almost every punch he throws. Gamboa might take a round or two to shake off the rust, but he'll win. Beltran can be next, or if Gamboa moves to LW, I'm okay with that too.

I guess if Gamboa can KO this dude (who only been down once and never KOed) it will make up for the Beltran fight not happening. It seems like Farenas is always cut or in a dirty fight too. This might end up like the Ponce fight and I hope not cause that would ruin his comeback.

I imagine you're joking. Below are excerpts from an ESPN article written by Dan Rafael, posted today:

Gamboa, who is moving up to junior lightweight after being stripped of a pair of featherweight belts, was originally slated to face Mexico's Miguel Beltran Jr. for a vacant interim title. However, Beltran (27-2, 17 KOs) was in a brutally tough fight on Sept. 15, losing a split decision in an all-action battle with Roman Martinez for a vacant world title on the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard.

"He was just physically not ready to go back in the gym after such a grueling match with Martinez," (Top Rank vice president Carl) Moretti said. "It was too soon of a turnaround."

After Beltran dropped out, Moretti said numerous names were discussed as an opponent for Gamboa, including Edner Cherry and Rene Gonzalez.

"We've been through a 100 names and a bunch of guys turned it down too," Moretti said.

They finally agreed on Farenas, who is with Pacquiao's MP Promotions and was going to be on the undercard anyway.

"Once Miguel Beltran fell out, the quest for an opponent began and the fact that (Farenas) was already on the card and he's a Filipino brought some natural cache to it," Moretti said.

True and it is a real possiblility watching how Farenas fights. I just want a performance like when he just obliterated Mtagwa and Solis. Something where the boxing world is talking about him again. This layoff and the rise of Broner has seemed to dull the hype he had around him somewhat.

If 50 moves him right, he's P4P top 10 by this time next year or early 2014.
