ok i'll mention the knockdowns vs kabary salem and byron mitchell. This is close. I think Ward is awesome but I would give the nod to Calzaghe.
Reasons being he was so unorthodox... he was basically everywhere punching from all kinds of angles.
His work rate was unreal... throwing upto 1000 punches a fight (thats impressive for a SMW). This goes with his unreal stamina.
Had a great chin so taking Wards shots wouldn't have been the biggest problem due to his own lack of defense. (pls dont mentions the flash KDs against hopkins and RJJ)Comment

Fair point, but you must remember that Salem the Egyptian Magician was a scary man for anyone to face, with 12 devastating knockout wins over the course of his career. Few would be able to get back up from such powerful blows, but Joe was in a class above the rest.Comment

Both had equal will. That's about it. Calzaghe gets utterly deconstructed by Ward and exposed as the gimpier, less coordinated, less athletic, less ring intelligent pugger that he is. IMHO. Ward takes what 400 year old Hopkins beleaguered to the next level.Comment

You are calling Calzaghe unathletic?Comment

roflmfao!!!!!this would be a very interesting matchup. Calzaghe is still underestimated to this day.
He is a stylistic nightmare for just about anyone. He throws lots of punches, has very very fast hands, has a solid chin, fantastic ability to adapt, decent power, and to top it all off, he is an extremely awkward southpaw that throw punches from all kinds of unconventional angles.
He reminds me of a more awkward sergio martinez, that isn't scared to take a shot to get in an exchange with you.Comment

Ward is easily more athletic...people keep talking about how Joe hits at unconventional angles, but watch the shots Ward hit the southpaw stance of Dawson...very unconventional.Ward can fight unorthodox, conventional, inside, outside, southpaw, rough,etc...he would be able to nullify Joe's workrate and volume...
While we are having fantasy match ups and "what ifs" with Joe-Ward is actually fighting/or has fought some of the best of his time.It took Joe a few excuses before he finally got the stones to fight Lacy (though he did so in impressive fashion). He seemed to lack belief in himself to take better fights (he pulled out 3 times against Glen Johnson!).Comment
