Rigo, Rigo, Rigo. He leaves so much to be desired. He clearly won every round except 1 but, I was expecting so much more. I've seen Marroquin fight before several times. I knew he was strong and could take a punch but I still expected Rigo to get him out of there early or get more KD's.

Rigo getting rocked, let alone getting hit flush SURPRISED me.

If he signs with TopRank he fights in December. I'm interested to see who he fights.

I didn't know Marroquin beat Broner and Russel Jr. In the amateurs.

Considering everything Rigondeaux has been through in the lead up to this fight, is it surprising for him to have such a bad performance? I mean he didn't even know he was going to be able to fight until a few days ago.

I don't think his performance was that bad. What makes me uncomfortable is how composed he was after getting hurt. He showed some serious amateur tenancies and I don't recall many spots where he was sitting down on his punches, or punching with authority, lots of spots it looked like he was punching to score points.

When he stepped it up in spots he looked like he could stop Marroquin, then he would back off.

I don't get it.

good win for rigondeaux. who cares if he got stunned twice? he won almost every round and scored a couple nasty knockdowns. martinez nearly got ktfo by chavez after dominating for 11 rounds, **** happens

Gamboa gets a lot of grief around here for being "chinny." Yuri's trips to the canvass never concerned me. He's never really been hurt and he always comes back to tear his opponent a new one. Gamboa's hyper-aggressive and has shown a tendency towards recklessness. But that's his style. It's exciting.
Rigo, on the other hand, fights much more conservatively (and that's a huge understatement). He wins fights in (too often) boring fashion against guys that really have no business being in the ring with him in the first place. Yet, he managed to get tagged and rocked by an inferior fighter...twice.

Maybe it's just a case of "half-empty/half-full", but I'm concerned enough that I'd rather see him get some more work in before a Nonito showdown. And, oh, yeah...Rigo needs to win in exciting fashion, something his former Cuban Olympic squad teammate obviously understands.

plus he is what he is. he's too far in the game to become some exciting KO machine. he's always going to be a counter puncher which means he's going to have some boring fights. yes that probably means he'll miss out on some big fights but again he is what he is.

Perhaps you're right about Rigo "being what he is." Four-hundred-plus (almost 100% successful) amateur fights can do that to a man. But I've seen Guillermo turn it up against other fighters and close the show in electrifying fashion. I think it's clear he has it in him.

His style will always rely on what his opponent gives him, he doesn't feel comfortable leading and it's obvious because he doesn't show much variety when he does lead. He timed Marroquin so well in the second knockdown, I was honestly surprised that he got up. The fight that comes to mind right now is Lara/Hernandez, in which I thought going in that Hernandez would get stopped. Lara wasn't able to do so, but I did underestimate Hernandez, just like I underestimated Marroquin. Could Rigo have finished Marroquin? probably, but he wasn't willing to take the risk tonight. He also didn't throw to the body with enough conviction, but I'm not necessarily disappointed or worried about his performance. We'll see what happens when he fights a power puncher that's closer to his size, how will he deal with them? Will he become even more defensive-minded or will he open up and really go after them with a vengeance? That's why I don't mind the Donaire fight not happening atm. I wanna see Rigo in there with Arce or the winner of Mares/Moreno to see how he adjusts to their styles and their attributes. I think there's more to Rigo than just "counter-puncher" but he seems very reluctant to just let his offense flow. It is possible that he's afraid of getting tagged, or doesn't trust his chin.

Nicely put though I wasn't too impressed with him tonight though it wasn't because he got tagged a few times. I just felt it was a boring fight he was doing too much showboating in. Seemed more focused on showboating a bit of razzle dazzle than stepping it up.
