So what should Dawson do now?

I'd say in Ortiz's case it was ok to quit.A broken jaw is serious busines. Now, Victor ORtiz may say that quitting before it got worse was a "smart move". After all, he is kind of like the Anna Kournikova of the Boxing world. He can always fall back on modeling, assuming he protects that pretty face of his.
Chad Dawson? Not so much. And it doesn't help that he has got Jaw like crooked teeth either. Just sayin'.
Here Dawson didn't even seem badly hurt and he got up and flat out said he was done.
Very dissapointing.Comment

You answered your own question. If he's getting hurt by such a light puncher, it would make sense to call it day and go back to a healthy weight. If you think Dawson wasn't a stiff in there tonight, I'd question your motive. How is it a smart move to blatantly quit, considering the Twitter/facebook/internet age we're living in and the bad reputation that goes viral on blogs and forum's after a No-mas like that?
Secondly, the beating he was taking was from a 13ko puncher who hasn't knocked someone out in years.
I actually think that Ward has deceptive power and can crack, he just gets the same flack that Mayweather gets because he doesn't always push for the KO let alone sit down on his punches. Tonight, he did against a heavier guy that was out of his element, but this perhaps gives Ward the encouragement load up a little more frequently in his bouts at '68 from here on out.Comment

I've been a Chad fan for a long, long time. I was rooting for him tonight, even though I'm probably a bigger Ward fan. You know why? Cos I was praying he didn't give the same passive performance he's been phoning in since the Johnson 1 fight. I really wanted him to dig deep and show what he's got.
But tonight was plain awful. Quitting just topped it off.
I don't want to seem like one of those people who deserts a fighter after he loses. But if he doesn't care that much, why should we? From the stories you read about him to the way he fights, it just looks like he does enough to make good money without being truly dedicated.
If he doesn't care about wasting his talent, why should we?
Look at Ward. That kid breathes boxing. He wants to be f-cking great.
I don't see the same in Chad. And I haven't in a long time. It's been a slow decline and the moment he quit, that's pretty much when I gave up on him too.Comment

Go back to 175 where he is still the BEST in that Division...
Dawson will be just fine at 175 and I still see him dominating that Division (at least until Ward moves up lol)
No disrespect to Scully, he did all he can to try and snap Dawson out of his Mental Lapse but it was just nothing he could say or do to get to Dawson
I still think the Best Version of Dawson was with Mayweather Sr., maybe that is who he needs to go back toLast edited by sicko; 09-08-2012, 11:45 PM.Comment

Dawson wasn't badly hurt? Did you not see his legs sputtering from beneath him before Ward landed 5 or 6 consecutive clean punches?
Dawson wasn't '75 Dawson tonight. He looked like a guy who bit off more than he could chew against an elite fighter.Comment

Dawson quitting was a smart move, because he knew there was no way he was going to win the fight, and he was getting hit by everything Ward threw. He was getting a beating. His defense (and offense) looked worse, which is why I question the trainer, even when Dawson fought Hopkins I question Scully. I just don't know what Scully is teaching Dawson making him fight in some weird shoulder-roll stance. Dawson was constantly getting hit by the left hook, he didn't have his hands up.
Not to mention it was only recently he fought against Hopkins, didn't have a lot of time to rest from a 12round bout, with two cuts in his eyes, and he had to sacrifice a lot just to make the fight.
Chad has had that stance for a long time...Emmanuel Steward complained about it plenty....
Chad was fighting a good fight until he got clipped in the third...the fourth round just confirmed to him that if he went in there trying to do the gameplan(how he fought in the first 2 and a half rounds), he was gonna get clipped bad again with a left hook(especially if he was still feeling the punch)...so he just gave Ward the initiative and tried to avoid the dangerous shots......thats why he changed to his "whitakerish style"....to feel comfortable and try to avoid the big big shots...and set up a trap here and there, but Wards footwork and defense were to good and Chad gave up on that too...
Clearly Scully overlooked the whole left hook thing....but maybe its one of them things.....fighters always find certain things difficult......that hook was just too much for Chad....Comment

Go back to 175As a Dawson fan, I'm not that disappointed, I kind of expected this. Dawson will bounce back. Some fans will say he needs a new trainer? Dawson at his best when he was with Floyd Sr, but those bridges are burned. Maybe he should switch to Stewart, he will teach Dawson how to use his height and reach better.
Dawson didn't look fast at all, he wasn't moving as much, and he was right in front of Ward all the time. Keep in my I'm not making excuses for Dawson, Ward probably would have beaten Dawson at 175. But Dawson's skill go up and down everytime he switches trainers. As much as I like to blame the trainers, it's all on Dawson.Comment

Bro weight had nothing to do with that fight.
Ward skill level was through the roof.Comment

And that was a dumb move by Dawson to boot Steward. Going to Scully who didn't have the experience Steward has in high-profile fights was a downgrade.
Another thing I noticed when Dawson switched back to Scully is that his left hand looked worse, he's now fighting in this weird shoulder-roll stance, and he telegraphs the left-hand.
Steward and Mayweather Sr. have different training methods, but they stress the importance of lateral movement, something Dawson did not show against Ward. If you noticed in Dawson's career since leaving Mayweather Sr. his skills have slowly degrade every-time he switches trainers.Comment
