  • Is the US really no longer a boxing powerhouse?

For those who say the United States is still not a powerhouse in boxing lets do the math according to Ring magazine. Now my final numbers are off by 8, but you will have to excuse me because it is 5am. Here's a breakdown of countries and top 10 fighters represented in every weight class including p4p.

    United States 36
    Mexico 30
    Japan 17
    UK 15
    Philippines 14
    Thailand 7
    Russia 6
    Germany 5
    South Africa 5
    Poland 4
    Cuba 4
    Ukraine 4
    Panama 4
    Argentina 4
    Dominican Republic 3
    Puerto Rico 3
    Canada 3
    Australia 2
    Kazakhstan 2
    Armenia 2
    Nigeria 2
    Spain 1
    Denmark 1
    Malawi 1
    Romania 1
    Cameroon 1
    France 1
    Slovenia 1
    Uganda 1
    Bulgaria 1
    Italy 1

Seriously, has the US fallen off that badly considering boxing is now a "world sport" in comparison to the years when communists were not allowed to go pro? Im not a nationalist, Im only responding to the US bait threads I've seen pop up the last few days. Thoughts?

I think you need to compare these numbers with statistics from 10, 20 and 30 years ago. It would be interesting.

Those numbers are not relevant. Boxing was not a "world" sport than as it is today according to many on this site. My only purpose with this thread is to combat the nationalistic hate for the United States with the simple fact that the US is still amongst the elite even in its decline. 20 years from now the numbers I provided just might be meaningless, but as it stands today they are facts, and that isn't even talking about the popularity decline of the sport here and explosion of interest in it amongst other countries.

Yes the USA's presence in boxing has diminished from 20 or so years ago, but that doesn't mean it's not a force to be reckoned with as the list you've compiled will tell you.

I think the greatest factor in making people feel like the USA has fallen off is the never ending succession of garbage heavyweights looking to fight the Klitschkos for a payday.

In that case you definetely showed that the US is still the biggest player. I reckon it would still be true if you took the rankings from a less US-biased media than Ring Magazine.

I give credit where its due and the world has caught up since many countries have changed their policies and now allow their athletes to turn pro....it is inevitable that this would happen. I just get a laugh out of the nationalistic morons on this site who spout their agenda the whole time leaving out the facts. I would be interested in the breakdown from another source besides "The Ring" if anyone were willing to put the time in and crunch the numbers. I thought about breaking down the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO rankings, but I just don't have the time to do it at the moment so this was just a little taste to fight the propaganda ****'s of this forum.

Some time ago I posted the p4p rankings from german tabloid BILD, and they where extremely 'alternative' to the rankings usually seen on anglon medias. I'm certainly not saying that they where more 'correct', but they showed that things have a different perspective depending upon from where you are.

That's understandable. Nobody is ever going to agree completely on rankings. My point isn't to even tout the US as the best, in all honesty I really don't care. Give me good, exciting fights and it couldn't matter less to me where a fighter is from. But I am proud of my country and will provide facts when its unfairly and unfactually put down repeatedly by others with a nationalistic and race agenda.

Lots of "America" haters out there, but I take it as a compliment. A hater is not going to hate on a country that never wins or has nothing. A hater is going to hate on a country that has everything, a country that always wins, someone or something they are jealous of. That's one reason and probably the main reason why we have haters.
