I am sure that some good potential heavyweights were lost to football and basketball but aren't most pro ball players well over 200 lbs.? It would have no real effect on weight classes below 200 lbs. Also a great ball player could make a terrible boxer and that has been shown many times in the past. A great fighter like Tyson or Dempsey might stink at basketball or football. So it is hard to say which pro ball players might have been good fighters. The sports are so different. I voted the rest of the world is catching up.

"The US is not doing as well in boxing because they're all in the NBA & NFL" - agree?

The world is catching up and heavyweights today are super heavy..
frasier ali marciano louis will all be fighting at cruiser today.
plus the scientific training today is more advance...
15 to 20 years ago the basketball dream team were winning games average leads are from 20 to 50 points every game...
they are above the rest..
But last 2002 and 2004 olympics we were defeated and that's with an all star players...
last saturday we won against lithuania with only 5 points.. compare that to the first dream team its a disappointment.. argentina was playing great the first half of the game...
its catching up ...

Losing potential boxers to other sports is a factor however I have honestly only ever seen Americans bring it up and they do constantly but it works exactly the same for every nation so it renders the excuse worthless.
Every country on earth can use the exact same excuse if boxing is not there top and most participated in sport.
Yes I'm sure Europe would be dominating from WW to SMW if football wasn't the most popular sport on earth.

I completely disagree with losing athletes to other sports. I think that is such a cop out. Point blank if its amateurs or pros.....they just don't make guys like that anymore. Guys afraid to throw the hands and get hit back. Point blank they just don't have that many guys that like to hit people anymore AS WELL as get hit back as funny as that may sound.

This question is worded with a agenda. If you said amatuer boxing you would have a point but American boxing still dominates the pro ranks period. Their is definitely something wrong with our amateur program and something needs to be done. I think by the Olympic scoring system going back to a 10 point must system will help how Americans do in amatuer boxing from here on out. I honestly think A LOT of our heavyweights are playing football though. Others see it as a excuse but other countries are not in the situation so they really don't know the effect. Now the smaller weights is a different story. The lower weights will always be dominated by the countries that have smaller people. This would be the Asians and latinos.
With that being said the world is getting better also. Use common sense.

It's not a coincidence that boxing declined when those sports became popular.
