Canelo and Cotto would be a war. Sergio doesn't do well with guys his size from his own division. Sergio is all about calling put smaller guys from other divisions. Lacks ballz. Cotto & Canelo certainly aren't lacking. Cotto could even take on Bernard Hopkins at a catch weight. Helluva payday, and along with Canelo the only two that could pull that fight off. Like when Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns went up to 160 and beyond to 175, because they had the ballz, they were Legends in the making. Sergio Martinez isn't from that mold. He'd rather fight a 135lber.
Leonard didn't go to 175, he made Donny Lalonde come down below 168, so as to fight for "both" titles. Lalonde did well but was worn out in the last half of the fight.
I would like to see him try to win a title at 160. I know he's a bit small but I think he has the skill to do it, and if he did then all of a sudden a Mayweather rematch would become an interesting and viable proposition.
When are people going to realize that Canelo fought in March, June, September, and November last year????
If the right money is offered and if both sides want that fight, it could happen in December easily. Schaeafer already mentioned, back when Alvarez-Kirkland was suppose to be happening, that he envisions Canelo fighting Kirkland in September and than Cotto in New York City in December.
It can happen, we'll have to wait and see.
It's not about his physical capability it's about time for the promotion. The Pacquiao fight is 2 weeks before that. Canelo would have to go straight from the Lopez fight to the press tour and then camp.
I could go with Cotto/Martinez, but Jr is just too fvking big.
I'm sure Martinez wouldn't hesitate to get a fight with Cotto in front of an electric NY crowd. The only fight that would top it is against Mayweather.
