Exactly. Ask a casual fan to name a fighter south of 135 and see how many they can name. Donaire, Gamboa, etc... might be household names to the folks that make up the traffic on this site but to the general public they are relatively unknown.

To the general public anyone who isn't Mayweather, Pacquiao, De La Hoya or black and white era is unknown.

I've heard this before, and the numbers kinda seem to confirm it, but it still makes no sense to me. Casual fans wouldn't know Ward or Martinez either IMO, nor the Klitschkos assuming they live this side of the atlantic.

I ask around and the only fighters people seem to know are Pacquiao, Mayweather and their recent opponents (and Cotto's, but thats cause im PR).

Boxing has no one watching. These are tiny numbers in the grand scheme of TV. I know it's HBO and not as many people have it, but that doesn't take away no one is watching.

Boxing needs a network if it's to ever get popular in America again.

in 2007 calzaghe vs kessler was the worst hbo boxing ratings ever at the time with 1.59 million viewers.
thats because tv has changed a lot since last decade. ppl arent willing to pay for premium subscriptions like they used to. there are so many alternatives out there nowadays. those ratings will probably never come back tho.

Even if boxing is mostly being recorded, people are still seeing it. Chavez tried to make it seem like HBO was adding the + same day so they could boost their ratings. This is the way ratings are reported in general.

I asked about this multiple times to clarify about the same day aspect and the person who provided me with the data insisted that there was nothing inaccurate by including the same day portion.

I wouldn't stress out about if some fights are being recorded with DVR, it still counts as ratings and people are still watching Boxing.

Chavez made a big deal out of nothing, IMO.

                edit:

                In the article, Chavez writes:

No one was being lied to. The way ratings are reported are Live + Same Day.
Thanks for clearing that up. It's been bugging me a while now.

Another thing that bugged me about that was how he claimed this was a new tactic on HBO's part, yet he posted calzaghe vs kessler as live plus same day reply which was from years ago.

HBO and Showtime pay the boxers too much money so other networks can't afford to take in the best talent.

I don't think that can really explain it because HBO currently has 29 million subscribers, which near it's all time high amount of subscribers.
