What's Worse: Pacquiao draining Cotto by 2 lbs, Or Ward draining Dawson by 7 lbs?

I don't think either of them are bad.

Dawson is dropping to 168lbs for the money fights, how this fight is viewed on Ward's resume depends on how successful Dawson is during their fight and against subsequent opponents at 168lbs.

If Dawson loses easily and returns to 175lbs that will look bad for Ward, if Dawson does well and goes on to defeat the likes of Kessler, Froch, Dirrell and Bute, it will look like a great win.

As for Pacquiao, having watched the actual fight the 2lbs don't mean a great deal, he would have battered Cotto at 147lbs too, he's just better than him.

This thread is immature. Pacquiao and Ward did not hold a gun to their head and say drop weight. Cotto and Dawson chose to compromise in weight because they wanted the big money fights.

Quit whinning about Cotto, who fought at 140 most of career because he had to weigh in at 145 against a smaller man. It was his choice, he was not made to do anything.

Interesting to see so many people trying to justify Ward's conduct. I haven't seen one valid argument to excuse Ward for making this fight so unfair, in terms of weight draining. I don't think there's any excuse really.

People are saying Dawson requested the 168, but the truth is that was after the Hopkins rematch, during the post fight interview. Fighters say silly things after a fight all the time, they're still pumped up or dazed. But Ward subsequently made it clear that he would only fight Dawson if he was weight drained by 7 pounds. Otherwise, the fight just wouldn't have been made. He basically backed Dawson in to a corner, 168 or no fight. That's the epitome of a b*tch move.

This tread is absolutely false & full of propaganda. Ward did not weight drain Dawson, nor did he ask to fight him.

Pacman did force a catch weight on Cotto, he wanted the fight at 143 actually. Cotto was the champ & had to accept 145. Dawson challenged Ward at Ward's weight.

The lengths people go to to try & justify Pacman's stipulations are extreme.

 @ Pac "forcing" Cotto to fight him
and he wasn't drained either, that excuse is beyond old
and if Dawson says he can do SMW comfortably, then he's not drained
people just looking for shit to complain about here

According to Cotto. He said that he wasn't himself in his fight with Manny because of the weight restrictions. If I remember correctly, Cotto wasn't allowed to rehydrate over 145 either on fight night or he will have to pay a penalty. Cotto said that he didn't want to fight Manny at 145 if it was for the 145 title but he was forced to or be stripped of his belt. He wanted to fight at 147 if it was for the belt. I'll look for the interview. Cotto stated that he would not fight at another catch weight with Manny because he doesn't want to sacrifice his body again. He said that if Manny wanted to fight him then he would have to come up and fight him at 154.

You're just looking at the semantics or "accepted terminology" and trying to use that to justify the fight. Just because 168 is a recognized division, it does nothing at all to change the fact that Dawson has been a 175 fighter for 6 years, and will undoubtedly be physically compromised because he has to drain a massive 7 pounds. He needs to lose over 3 times more weight than Cotto did against Pacquiao.

All I care about is a fair fight, you can flush all your excuses down the toilet.

According to the fight contract, the Puerto Rican will be fined $1 million for every pound in excess of 145 lbs., The Philippine Star reported. Moreover, if Cotto goes a fraction beyond 147 lbs., Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, reportedly said he would call off the bout.

It won't let me post the link here though. I'll look for another with this information.
