Anyone on here that is downing Ortiz for not fighting on with a broken jaw needs to realize how serious a broken jaw really is. Yes fighters have fought on with broken jaws but nobody knows the extent of the breakage. Until you have had your jaw broken, you shouldn't talk down on the guy. Not only is the pain unbearable but the slightest tap on the jaw is extruciating. Not to mention your mouth fills with blood and you swallow plenty of it. It's easy to trash the guy while sitting on your couch.Comment

I actually think it was that round in which he got his jaw broken. Lopez hit him with a uppercut and you heard something crack. You can tell Danny's whole body language change after Victor whispered to him.Comment

99% of this forum wouldn't step in a ring with a Flyweight professional it doesn't mean they aren't going to critisize a fighter for quitting. Whether their jaw if broken or they sprained their finger or just didn't feel like fighting.
Professional fighters and the average joe aren't held to the same standard.
This is a sport where fighters are expected to continue under any circumstance.
Do I blame him? No, I don't. Would I have done it? Of course I would have.
That doesn't change the fact he's obviously open to criticism here.Comment

The Racket Squad: Jaw Gone Conclusion
The injury that Victor suffered is a painful reminder from a brutal sport that some can endure and other's simply cannot tolerate.
Some men select to cease all fire.
Others venture to mentally disgard the massive ache that they know shall arrive with each delivered punch.
Ortiz had displayed quit in his Maidana appearance but bit the bullet with Berto.
He even stated that he did not know if he deserved to get beaten up when questioned about his heart.
There is little surprise here.
Golden Boy selected Ortiz for Canelo due to all of the unstable moments he has shared with fight fans over the last few years.
He built a name and a brand based on his tale of tragic childhood and an uncertain mental structure.
His profile was high and his style on any night could be reckless and very dangerous.
In the end, his heart failed as all he needed to do was box for the remaining stanzas to aquire his millions and a chance to upset a Ginger flavored apple cart.
What anguish would you endure for 2 million dollars?
Yes. That is a loaded question but one that Lopez was obviously more prepared to answer given his complexion after the contest.
Lopez fought with a heart that was known to exist yet had been hidden
from a larger audience.
He will no longer be ESPN fodder.
This performance was worthy of a true major showcase.
Nice work Joselito.
As for Victor, I think he recognizes by this point that this career path is simply not going to last much longer.
He is hardly unintelligent. Most prizefighters have an intrinsic brilliance that compells them.
A rematch may be interesting but the proof in the Ortiz pudding has already been fulfilled.Comment

I think ortiz is a good fighter .. I just hate the things he has done at times as like the maidana fight interview at the end.. The headbutt incident wit mayweather where he shouldnt had done that maybe there couldve been a change later in the fight and now the jaw situation .. I think the only thing he needs to work at is his desire to continue in a fight and his ability to stay focus on finishin a fight..Comment

I don't understand where the relevance in that is though?

He's obviously going to be criticized because that goes with it. But when people talk about his broken jaw as if they could feel it, or know what he could or could not have done(calling him a coward), I'm not going to accept that just because they are "fans". It's easy to do when you're not in that situation. We don't even know the extent of the break yet.
I don't understand the criticism anyway. If his jaw is broken and he can't continue why is that an issue? It's not like he didn't fight hard an just laid down.Comment
