Is Manny Pacquiao the most overrated fighter of the past 25 years?

I agree.

However, there have been much worse cases of hype jobs than Manny Pacquiao. Yes, Pacquiao is the beneficiary of plenty of hype since signing to fight Oscar DelaHoya and every fight since then, but prior to the DLH bout Pacquiao had a legitimate campaign while rising up the ranks.

Sure Manny padded the hell out of his record with 30+ fights against obscure bums in southeast Asia, but he's has some scraps against solid name fighters that legitimize him being seen as a top brawler.

Bute never really has. Calzaghe really didn't either until Jones and Hopkins got old.

What really legitimizes a fighter as elite is if he can face the top 3 in a given division(s) and win over and over again. If he can reign with longevity against the top 3, and then move up and do it again against a new set of top 3, and do it again and again and again and again ... there are no questions left about his well deserved perception.

If someone hides out in a corner and only fights bums for 98% of their career and then adds a few faded names towards the end ... but is hailed as some conqueror of the sport ... well then that's overrated.

A LOT of names fit that criteria. Lots.

Padded by bums? Learn boxing. The guy started off at 16, he fought in a dog eat dog system, fought for a title at an early age and considered by the opponent as just another bum.

You don't reach his level by fighting bums.

Pacquiao accomplishments speak loud enough to show he is not overrated. I think Pacquiao deserves more credit than he gets. I mean he's completely blew world class fighters out of the water. What's to be overrated about that? Some boxing fans tend to forget Pacquiao was supposed to lose to all these big guys he fought, instead, he battered them.

His resume is fantastic. Sure he has some washed up guys on there, but he also has some live opponents to. DLH might have been washed up when Pacquiao got to him, however, many predicted DLH was going to knock Pacquiao the fack out.

Give Pacquiao the credit he deserves.

If Bert Sugar said that then I would listen to that more than 100% of the guys in this forum.

Pacquiao at 16 couldn't even make the minimum weight. He had to put metal in his pockets to make the weight. The guy had always fought bigger and stronger guys since his days fighting in the streets.

Who would have known that he would beat up pros with 20 lbs advantage in weight. Not close fights, but BEAT UP!

He was the favourite in the Cotto fight and the Marquez fight. He wasn't the overwhelming favourite, but he was the favourite. Just because it's not a clear favourite doesn't mean it's even. If it's evens, then it's even.

I don't think he was the underdog in the Sasakul fight either.

I doubt he was the underdog for Morales II. And, I'm pretty sure he was the favorite for Cotto as well.

Dont buy this thread starters claim. The very fact that he is making this thread is proof he is scared of how great people think Pac is, and its damage limitation that is all.

There is no way on gods earth i will believe what he wants people to believe he belives. The thread starter feels helpless and how great people think Pac is, is beyond his control. Making threads like this is empowering for the TS, as it is the only thing he can do in a helpless situation for himself. It is only to make him feel better about himself.....so i for one wont take his comments too seriously.
