I'm cuttin' Freddie some slack here by saying that he was around the right place at the right time to have made it this far. I think he's more of a great motivator than a trainer. But a good trainer nonetheless. Having a net worth of $20mill, I'd say he's done pretty good for himself.

Now it's up to the Pacman to make Timmy pay for hatin' on his trainer.

On top of that, Roach was setting Pac's fight up to other fighters handicaps. Roach should have had Manny fight some technical guys who display defense to get his skill set complete. Roach just taught Pac how to be offensive and use his speed to overwhelm his opponents but if he is in the ring with a fighter that knows how to nullify Pacquiao then he looks lost. Not to mention that Roach kept talking about this new and improved Manny Pacquiao before the Marquez fight but after said that he had an off training camp and a case of cramps? I honestly think that Roach plays off of his opponents weaknesses instead of focusing on how to make Pac stronger against technical boxers. He thought Marquez was done and was surprised to see the fight unfold how it did. how can a top 3, world class trainer not expect or be prepared for a fight against a guy they fought two times prior with both fights being competitive? Roach is a lil overrated.
good post grus, i think roach paid his dues, but is definitely a tad overhyped.
i mean, he worked with ALOT of champions... IMO, i judge a trainer based on resume and results.... for example, i give props to steward & diaz for re-shaping cotto.... i dont discredit them just because they werent with cotto the first time cotto laced 'em up (like some posters expect).

like we all know, boxing popularity is all about "the story".... and roach has the backstory tailor-made for hype. throw in some big name fighters in the mix and you got a marketable trainer.... overhyped? yes... but a very capable & deserving trainer nonetheless.

i agree with your assessment that roach trains to exploit bad habits of opponents instead of training his fighters to be more complete.... god forbid he teaches them to defend against an uppercut.

Roach been chosen "Trainer of the Year" several times setting a Record.
Come fight night, we will know who can full the trigger...
Trainer of the year dont mean ****. Its all politics. Jack Mosley won trainer of the year 2x and I dont see nobody running around calling him a great trainer. Roach is a great match maker. If he was a great trainer why do all of his fighters get out fought on the inside?

so you think angelo dundee is overrated too? ali never won clearly against norton right? the way you put the pac-jmm fight, as well as most posters here, makes one think you guys really don't think highly of jmm. and these same guys likes to put jmm high on their p4p list? dont you think jmm just might have pac's number, like norton had ali's?

Actually I have heard from a former pro boxer that I know that Dundee was more of a motivator than a trainer. So its quite possible that he is overrated. I have no opinion on Dundee either way though.
