What is so good about Winky's defense?

He just puts his arms up. Thats his defense. Nothing spectacular.

To be honest, I wouldn't even classify Winky as a "defensive fighter". His offense is his defence as you see him aggressively pursue with the jab and cut off the ring.Originally posted by BloodshedHe just puts his arms up. Thats his defense. Nothing spectacular.

He has excellent balance, and knows how to bob and weave to avoid punishment. He is awkward to his opponent, as most southpaws are. He just sticks to the basics and works with what He has.Comment

Taking punches on your gloves and slipping punches is a VERY big part of defense. Just because you can dodge punches and have incredible reflexes doesn't mean you're a defensive genious.
Guys like Whitaker and Floyd had both ends of the spectrum covered. They could use foot movement and their reflex to completely make people miss, or they could use their technique, sit in the pocket and slip punches/take punches on their gloves.
Guys liek Roy Jones had incredible reflex and could get out of harms way before he took a big shot, but that came back to bite him in the ass later on when he couldn't stop other fighters from hitting him so much.
Guys like Duran and Chavez are overlooked as far as their defense goes, when in reality those guys were pretty damned good (Duran was excellent) at slipping punches and taking them on his gloves.Comment

What compliments winky's defense is his overall strength, reflex and the stiff jab. His strength doesnt mean 1 punch ko power His reflex to know when to block upstairs and downstairs and the jab to keep you at bay and where he wants you in order for him to be affective. He is like the Pistons, he works his offense off of defense.
IMO his defense wont be as effestive at 175 if he goes there cause of the fact that relies on his strength to block shots. At that weight they will hurt more and get thru his strong hands and might have to change his defensive tactics with head movement.Comment

Blood - winky does NOT just put his arms up. It's not like he just leaves em up there and gets hit a lot. He times punches well and takes a lot of shots on his elbows and gloves, thus taking little damage from the actual punches thrown at him. He also uses that jab as a form of defense to disrupt the other fighters offense. This should be quite clear from watching him fight...I don't see how you cannot see this.
Tu - Winky is in almost every form of the word a defensive fighter, and I don't think I've ever seen him incorporate the bob and weave technique into his strategy. His defense is based upon timing, accuracy and toughness.Comment

I agree with a lot of this, bigger stronger guys are going to hit his arms harder and will eventually get him to drop his guard or may punch right through it.Comment

A good offense is a good defense. That is what Winky employs.Originally posted by oldgringoBlood - winky does NOT just put his arms up. It's not like he just leaves em up there and gets hit a lot. Winky’s southpaw stance, speed, footwork and experience make his ring generalship very good. He employs basic head movement (bob and weave) and keeps his hands up and chin tucked.
It's just the fact that He is such an aggressive fighter that makes his defense so good.Comment
