if you really think that Mexico is a boxing power house it's only because Cubans weren't aloud to fight in professional boxing. if we were to have the opportunity to fight more freely in professional boxing it would be a different story. i feel like over the years in boxing we would have more champions than any other country. just my opinion not a fact of course.

Casamayor was 36 and had already seen his best days. He lost to an acknowledged ATG in Marquez. Although Lara's win against Molina is questionable, he didn't get "whooped" by anyone. The fight was close.

Before Castro, there were Cuban ATGs like Kid Chocolate and Kid Gavilan. ATG Jose Napoles fled Cuba shortly after Castro took power. There have been other Cuban greats like "Sugar" Ramos and Luis Rodriguez. After the communists took over and outlawed professional sports, all our talent was limited to amateur competition.

Most of the few Cubans that've fled the island have attained quick professional success. Gamboa, despite his recent indiscretions, is a potential superstar, the top guy at 126. Rigondeaux became a world champ at 122 with only 9 pro fights. Yoan Pablo Hernandez is the cruiserweight champ. Lara is seriously in the mix at 154. Abril, who wasn't even considered a top Cuban fighter, recently dominated the feared Brandon Rios. The last I checked, none of these Cubans "slap."

There are several identifiable reasons why Cubans aren't as much into boxing as Mexicans and even Filipinos. I've participated several times in such discussions here over the years, so I'm not in the mood right now. Suffice it to say that Mexicans have had the opportunity to fight professionally for decades, therefore building a strong interest in the sport. The Filipinos have Pacquiao. A superstar like that tends to rally his people in great numbers.




Cubans are not interested in futbol, so that point is completely irrelevant. Any pursuit Cubans have ever cared about we've excelled at. Baseball is a passion in Cuba, and we've produced great athletes and teams. Futbol is a passion in Mexico. Please tell me how many World Cup titles Mexico has won? How many finals has she reached? How many semi-finals? Quarterfinals? I'll wait....

You say that you follow boxing and that you know the sport better than most Cubans you know. So why is it that you make the ridiculously ignorant statement that we produce "nobodies in boxing"? Cuba has several ATGs and Hall of Famers, despite being excluded from professional boxing for decades. We have Gamboa, Lara, Rigondeaux and Hernandez, among others. And let's not even talk about amateur boxing. Cuba has been the juggernaut in international amateur boxing for many years.

Spain got there by winning youth tournaments at the lower level. Which is what Mexico has been doing lately. Winning youth world cups.

Oh, really? While it's true that many futbol-loving countries haven't won World Cups, many have at least made the quarterfinals. The Netherlands, for instance, have been runners-up on three occasions, and have been in the final four a total of four times. So, you were saying?
