It'll be interesting to see what Mayweather & Pacquiao do after their respective bouts. I expect Floyd will take a tune-up when he comes out of the bing. And Manny...well, it depends on his promoter, Bob Arum. Either way, they are running out of opponents fast, especially Manny. Floyd at least has Martinez but the chances of that happening are slim.

Leonard fought them all. There was no delays. Leonard fought Hagler after a prolonged absence due to a detached retina. A viable excuse. It's not like there was a Margarito, Tzsyu, Cotto etc. left behind so stop it.

I think Bat that you've slipped up just a little on this one. Leonard had a detached retina, true. But when he announced he'd retired about 6-8 months later he said his eye was healed but he didn't want to fight any more. It took about 6 months for a detached retina at that time.

Then a couple of years later he made a comeback and fought a guy named Howard who gave him a tough fight, i think he even knocked him down. I remember it all very well. He retired again, and didn't come back to fight Hagler until, 2-3 years later he was watching him fight Mugabi and realised that Hagler was on the slide, that he'd slowed down and was he was having difficulty handling Mugabi. it was then, that he decided to make another comeback and fight Hagler.

Leonard has said this himself after the Hagler fight, when he was questioned about it, and realised that he was lucky to have got the decision over Hagler. He said he was too smart to fight him a return. I can still see him with a knowing look on his face, tapping his head with his finger and saying "Oh no, Oh, no, not me, I'm too smart for that.....I'm paraphrasing a bit but the gist of what he said is accurate. Anyone who saw the interview will corroborate me.

To those who are implying Leonard was scared to fight Pryor, are you implying Hearns at that time was a much less dangerous fight?

It was more of a risk vs. reward. Pryor wasn't as well known, and the fight with Tommy was building to be huge. Pryor beat Tommy in the amateurs, was an animal that just never stopped coming and SRL thought he could outbox Tommy. Lower risk, higher reward. As evidenced by all the fights during that era between Hearns, SRL, Duran, etc.. they all could have beaten one or another on any given night considering conditioning, how close they were to their prime, etc... It's a shame that Pryor was never in that discussion against the welters as he would have won some and lost some just like all of them.

Hearns was a much bigger risk than the 140 lb. Pryor.

I agree they'll both be hall of famers regardless, but there's no doubt there'll be an empty hole if they don't fight and anytime both guys' names are brought up in the future that potential fight will always be brought up. It doesn't necessarily destroy their legacies, but no doubt leaves a bit of a question mark.

Yeah but not that big of a question mark IMO. The fight's relevance was pretty much squashed after Marquez whooped Pac in November. They are both rich, both Hall of Famers, they both sealed their spots long ago, the rest is really just icing.

I am just reading this tread now. I have been a big boxing fan for over 50 years and this is my first post, but I have followed this board for years. Sugar Ray should not criticize Floyd and Manny for not making the fight yet. Leonard was the big money maker and he only took the fights he wanted, when he wanted them, and on his terms only. He turned down Hagler's offer to fight for many years until Hagler showed signs of decline from so many tittle defenses against the best challengers. He also refused to rematch Hearns for many years until Hearns looked shot. He never gave Hagler a rematch even though the boxing fans were begging for it.
