i'd say Wright's at least a candidate for dominating/retiring Trinidad. keep in mind, (even tho it's got 'mismatch' written everywhere here) he'll probably make a poster out of Sam Soliman before the years out, and if he does it in spectacular fashion (which is what im predicting) he makes it on the ballot at least.
Jermaine Taylor would SERIOUSLY have to show me something saturday night to be considered a fighter of the year.. other than winning a controversial decision to Hopkins this year, what else has he done compared to others in the sport?
The same basically goes for Hopkins, it really depends on who makes an impact in the rematch this saturday, i'd put Hopkins on the ballot if he really took Taylor out of his game (same goes for Taylor), results pending.
"Quality" is the key word keeping Top 3 P4P Mayweather out of the running.
Chris Byrd's probably the least deserving champion this year with his joke of a fight against DaVarryl "Dude actually put me to sleep" Williamson. Longest 36 minutes of boxing in my life.
Castillo's easily a candidate for his classic first fight, then second win with Corrales and his win over a then, 30-2 Julio Diaz earlier this year.
Hatton's also a posibility after handing Kostya Tszyu only the 2nd loss of his career and his nice looking KO win over Maussa last weekend.
Antonio Tarver would make the ballot of a 'pop' boxing fan, really didn't do too much "impressive" in his two rematches this year. If not "fighter of the year" maybe he'll settle for an "oscar" in the destined to be classic
new Rocky.
MAB did, i think, enough in 'hardcore' fans eyes to get looked at with two impressive wins this year, taking out Fana in 2 rounds and his amazing display against Robbie Peden 3 months ago.
I also think Rafael Marquez turned alot of heads this year with the win over Ricardo Vargas and quick and accurate work over 'highly projected' Silence Mabuza a month ago.
Another fighter that comes to mind is Oscar Larios.. he fight's one more time this year on the Hopkins/Taylor card against legit contender, 38-3 Israel Vazquez.. he's had two wins over Wayne McCullough and he now has the most title defense streak since they gave Hopkin's belts to Taylor. If he adds a nice W on saturday night, he could be considered.
My ballot would look something like this:
altho it come with some criticism, i think Jeff Lacy deserves an award for people's champ this year, successfully defending his titles in March, August, and November of this year.
btw someone mentioned,
Klitschko was 2004. Altho you could say he had the best year out of the heavyweights, what's that compared to the other fighters mentioned here. He does have the most potential of the heavyweights in 2006.

He (Brewster) had a great year. He knocked out all 3 of his opponents in Klitschko, Golota, Krasniqi.
