      1 Hatton is the MAN.
2 Taylor if he wins the rematch
3 Castillo, only 2-1 this year, but what a 2-1!

Ricky Hatton, he beat the best Welterweight in the division, and unified the IBF and WBA titles.

thought i'd dig this one back up to update:

            Previously-
My ballot would look something like this:

            Ronald 'Winky' Wright - 49-3
            Jose Luis Castillo - 53-7
            Ricky Hatton - 40-0
            Marco Antonio Barrera - 61-4
            Jermain Taylor/Bernard Hopkins - PENDING
            Oscar Larios - 56-3 PENDING
            Rafael Marquez - 35-3
            Okay, now it looks like:

            Ronald Wright
            Ricky Hatton
            Jose Luis Castillo
            Marco Antonio Barrera
            Jermain Taylor
            Rafael Marquez
            Lamon Brewster

Oscars off after taking that tough loss due to a cut, added Brewster, and *gulp*.. Taylor's on the ballot as well.

also, keep in mind Winky could, like i mentioned way back, futher his chances for fighter of the year if he scores an impressive victory saturday night.

This is so obvious it's not even funny. To win the award, you gotta be undefeated and win at least ONE meaningful fight against strong opposition. The answer is cut and dry:

                  JERMAIN TAYLOR

He beat the then-number one guy in the sport, then he beat him AGAIN. Taylor also won another fight in February, although it was against mediocre opposition.

So Taylor is 3-0 for 2005, the first qualifier.

He beat Bernard Hopkins TWICE, once when Hopkins was considered the best fighter on the planet and the second time by unanimous decision.

Winky Wright and Floyd Mayweather come in 2nd and 3rd.

                    And Mayweather did.... WHAT, exactly?

I think it's a disaster for the sport if a guy who got two gifts (one from the judges, the second from the Slop) is fighter of the year. Particularly as his wins were against the most overrated fighter of the present age.

altho Mayweather fought 3 times this year, his level of competition gets a C- grade average.

I'll put money on Ricky Hatton taking it this year. And damnit Diego, as for Taylor, the keyword here is "CONVINCING".
