After all, he knocked out Sanders (who was admittedly overweight and underplanned) who deserved his number three ranking for knocking off former number one contender Wladimir Klitschko. Vitali, of course, deserved his ranking for holding Lewis, who was coming off the best win of his career, to a stoppage on cuts, and then knocking out lower-echelon top-ten Kirk Johnson. The fact that he only defended once was a bit hard to justify, but note the class he revealed by surrendering the title when he realized he would be putting the division on ice for ANOTHER six months. They picked the best fighter for the position based on his latest performance after Lewis retired. It makes perfect sense if you have a long memory.

Think about it, at about the same time that Vitali was beating Sanders for the title, Byrd was being held to a draw by unranked Andrew Golota, and Brewster was outlasting Wladimir, who wasn't within spitting distance of the top-ten. I mean, they couldn't award the title retroactively to Chris Byrd for beating Holyfield, nor could they award it to Brewster for squeaking into the top-ten by beating a guy who had just been knocked out two fights before.
I totally disagree. Byrd had much better wins than Vitali. Vitali's biggest claim to fame was a loss. He beat Corrie Sanders who was nothing. Just cause Sanders knocked out Wladimir didn't make Sanders some great. That'd be like saying Evander Holyfield was a great champ b/c he beat Buster Douglas after Douglas upset Tyson. Douglas ******, so did Sanders.

Kirk Johnson? Had Kirk Johnson actually come into the ring in any kind of shape whatsoever, I'd call it a good win, hell, I'd call it Vitali's best win period. But, surely you saw the kind of shape Kirk the Hutt decided to come into the ring as. Not Vitali's fault, I know.

And Vitali didn't give up the belt for this whole year until the WBC gave him 60 days or they'd strip him. That's when he gave up the belt. He saw there was no way he'd get out of fighting Rahman, so he quit boxing all together, supposedly at least (time will tell).

So since losing to Lewis, he beat Kirk Johnson, Sanders, and Danny Williams. Danny Williams also came in grossly out of shape. Even if he came into the ring in perfect shape, it's Danny Williams.

So how does the Ring justify having a guy who hasn't fought in 2005 as their Heavyweight champ?

And on top of that, he has a loss to Chris Byrd, another one of the four champs in the division.

The Ring supposedly doesn't go by the belts, but do you really think they'd have named Vitali the champ had he not had one of the 4 belts? I don't think they would have. They'd have either had it vacant or called Byrd the champ.

Because I would like to see the WBC follow their own rules for a change, not to mention I seen Maskaev vs Rahman 1 and I would like to see it done again.

            * Vitali was the people's champ regardless of what Ring says. Looks like "the people" also run Ring mag.

Byrd has never been anything more than a houseboy for King since signing with him. Byrd was a good tough savvy little fighter for a while that Lennox ducked before he retired, but Byrd is past prime and slowly slipping as he looks around and tries to figure out how to get his soul back from King.

I've love to see Maskaev KO Toney's lardass. Rahman could do it, but he's such a slug these days I'm surprised nobody's sprinkled salt on him to make him go away. Hopefully Maskaev gets a shot next year.

You can't post in any thread without mentioning VK's name, can you? Where in this thread did I say anything at all about Vitali? I was talking about someone new and young and Vitali definitely doesn't fall into that category. Putting words in other people's mouth does not win arguments

It's all about the WBC breaking it's own rules, it's sad that they even wasted their time hauling their asses all the way to Germany and sanctiong the Maskaev / Sam fight as a mandatory. It's false advertising and the WBC should be sued.
