I think the WBC made it to bestow special honours for some very noteworthy fight which involved someone they regarded as a super-fighter, maybe MannyP. It was to be an honour, an award, a special gift, almost like a boxing Nobel Prize. They were projecting "niceness", good-fellowship and bonhomie. They weren't trying to create a new division, so, although not sure, I don't think there were any fees.

All the aficionados were very critical of it, saying it was a phony belt, although the award didn't neccessarily have to be a belt. It could have been a Waterford cut glass vase. In boxing a "belt" seemed more appropriate.

Still, I'm sure it'll also be used to hype the fight. Make it seem like Cotto has more than he really does. By calling him the champion, many will think it's his, even if it's not directly said so. Don't underestimate the word champion to the casual hispanic fan.

If the promoters asked for it, I guess it wasn't the WBC just trying to stick their nose in it. You'd say "ok" too if you were approached lol.
