The first thing a young boxer should learn in my opinion is

Positioning........because you have to be in the right position to evade a punch and at the same time return a punch.i was working with my son today and he has solid defense but im trying to teach him to not remain in a shell and make his opponent pay for his mistakes........but you have to remain in position to accomplish that..next is timing.you have to time the miss and the punishment.it comes down to science and thats why i love this sport.1 wrong angle, one inch to close or to far and you cant accomplish your goal

please state you opinions on what you think are the important aspects

yea basically but its defense and also being in position to not only evade the punch but making him pay for missing...........its one thing to dodge a punch(which is hard enough)but to be able to land a punch a split second later is a work of art..im teaching my son alot cause this summer its on he's going to start competing and im going to be right there in his corner...cant wait

it depends, does the guy know something or is just beginning.
for me footwork comes first before everything, the feet will never catch up if you miss teaching footwork in th beginning

Agreed. And jab, jab, jab- to the body. That jab to the pit of the stomach is so effective and underutilized.

true.but footwork comes into positioning imo.but in training we always make them do footwork drills around the ring to get used to movement..but you must remain in position to evade punches and land your own

id rather teach him how not to take it.but i see your point cause i hit him off guard alot and tell him to remain calm when he gets hit cause emotion has no role in boxing
