I would think that even if there was no promotional contract existing with Top Rank (I assume that's what is being referred to here) it would not preclude a fight agreement being made. it would not neeccessarily be related to a promotional contract.
Boxers do it al the time, Cotto just did it. Of course we don't know the details, and it may be that they're required to sign a 1 fight promotional deal with the promoting company(ies).Comment

What seems more likely to me is that Gamboa either by intent or inadvertently, mis-informed his lawyer as to the exact relationships between him and his promoters, and also about the upcoming fight. It's interesting that all this has erupted shartly after his domicile (temporary I expect) in the Mayweather gym.
It sure seems that Floyd has his hand in this fiasco. The court documents don't name the "poachers," but the Mayweather group is probably who they're referring to. If Floyd got Gamboa into this mess, he'd better help him out.Comment

It sure seems that way. I cannot imagine Yuri concocting this idea by himself, nor having the nerve to go through with it without receiving assurances. If Gamboa's gone about all this by himself, I don't think he's ******...but quite literally insane!Comment

too bad this guy was already set up to be the next star but he didn't follow the script laid by top rank for him. somehow this guy got corrupted. he was on his way its an hbo fight. mainstream fans would finally see his talent. i doubt he will came out of this mess unscathed. it looks like top rank is going after him full force. they want him liable for all the money spent for promoting this fight. that could mean millions and a long court battle. he doesnt have the resources to do it. to bad cause this guy has a lot of talent.Comment

Nah bro... sorry... That **** doesn't fly in court.
Yes your honor... he told me he promised he would be there.
--No I didnt....
Now its your word vs his.
Funny you laugh at my assertion yet yours is easily laughable and even moreso if you have in fact taken class on this.
If you can't prove it, then it doesn't matter.
Why EVEN HAVE contracts if all you need is a verbal "sure Ill be there!"
Offer and acceptance, promisee and promisor is what contract law breaks down to. If someone enters a contract, all of the actions involved in said contract break down into what I described above. You are taking it too literally. No one goes into the court room and says" I promised this he accepted said promise, no I did not", on and on. You really think that this"your word vs mine" is judicial kryptonite. If Gamboa denies all this, then TR puts on its case to prove otherwise. There is a reasonable person standard used. Is it reasonable to believe that Gamboa accepted 70k just as a loan or for the fight? Flat out denying everything is not a defense in contract law. I already explained the several defenses in contract law in previous posts (duress, mistake, misrepresentation, etc.)Comment

Bad situations for Gamboa. Why does everyone elite fighter that signs with Top Rank later on realizes that it was a bad move? Examples De La Hoya, Mayweather, Pacquiao, Donaire, and Now Gamboa. Top Rank has the Nevada courts in there pocket. Somebody should investigate that.Comment

BOXAHOLIC my understanding of the situations surrounding all the figures you've named as being prominent and leaving Top Rank...is that only ONE did, Mayweather, whom Arum decided was more trouble than he was worth to keep him considering the enormous acrimony. All the others are either still with Top Rank, or like Oscar and Cotto, didn't renew when their long term contracts had expired. Oscar had a long held ambition to become a promoter and Arum built up his fame and enough money for him, with several other money partners, to start Golden Balls. Cotto's contract just expired Dec 31st. He may still renew some time in the future. I don't care anyway.
I'm sure that, if you know anything about boxing, you already know all this, but, it seems, for your own purposes you prefer to gloss over this and stab at Arum personally. I couldn't care less, but hate to see distorted facts when the real facts are available.
Oh yes, and because I'm constantly fed up seeing words misspelled, I want to say that the word is "their", not "there" which has a different meaning entirely.Last edited by edgarg; 03-15-2012, 03:22 PM.Comment

gamboa is looking out for himself like cotto did. toprank is stealing money from all its fighters.this is why both petersons brothers, ortiz, torres,k holt and soto all left toprank. pac should be getting way more than he's making per fight.somebody give arum the thief his money so gamboa can move on.Comment
