Pavlik was doing good until the last rounds. He needs to have a good conditioning to beat Martinez. He was slowing down a bit from 8 - up, his punches becoming weak. Martinez on the other hand was superb till the end.

I don't see anything special in Chavez, mediocre fighter at best. Pavlik at smw would absolutely destroy Chavez by KO, a weight drained pavlik at 160 would still have a good chance to beat Chavez.

Does anyone seriously believe Pavlik started camp at 195lbs "of muscle"?

The only way Kelly makes 160 properly is if he starts living cleanly and taking care of himself between fights. But he's a young, talented millionaire and he lives as he wants to. That's his choice and I wouldn't criticise that, you're a long time dead, but he'll only be a really top drawer fighter by using his physical advantages at 160 and the only way he does that is with commitment.

I still think he can be a very good fighter at 168 or more likely 175 without giving up his lifestyle, but he's most effective at 160.

Yeah, I scoffed at this, too. He just doesn't have the frame for it.
Recently they said that he came into the training camp with Garcia weighing 172. That was his walking around weight. So 23 pounds of muscle just vanished somehow. Don't buy it.

Well, if they're telling the truth, he's walking around under the LHW limit. Meanwhile, his opponents would be coming down from 185-190 or whatever. He wouldn't want to give up that much size, especially as a guy who does much better when he's the bigger, stronger man. Pavlik is tall, but he has a slender frame. If he truly is walking around at 172, I don't see why he can't fight at 160.

I don't dispute that he was 195lbs, I just don't believe it was muscle.

haha, obviously not muscle, but I believe he was that heavy. I remember there were rumors of him being really out of shape before the fight. And then we found out he went into rehab just days before the fight.

He rehydrated 20+ pounds if I recall. Usually that's an indication that the fighter wasn't in the best shape. And it showed. Him bleeding like that so easily I think was a result of not being in good shape and drinking (all the big drinkers bled a lot Chavez Sr., Ricky Hatton, etc.).

Anyways, Martinez probably beats him any day, just sayin I don't think that was a 100% pavlik by any means that night. Maybe 75% or less.
