Rios Gamboa.....Fight of the Year....

When fighters can land their combinations so easily like Gamboa will against Rios, they have a tendency to gain false confidence. They think "ok I'll just keep doing this and I'll chop him down and get him out of there". Then while they're still connecting they're taking punishment in return.

If Rios is healthy at 135 I think he'll be able to eat Gamboa's shots, and being able to land those shots could lull Gamboa into a false sense of security. It happens all the time with superior fighters when fighting guys who can take their punches.

That's actually a HUGE IF.........last time out at 135 Rios looked horrible at weigh in......this is a known fact.......



but word on the street is they are working with a nutritionist and doing things "right" (as supposed to the wrong way????) any how he should make the weight in a healthy way this time around....but we'll see.....

Reach wont be a factor since Rios will be walking towards Gamboa all night. It will be a lot easier for Gamboa to get his shots off then bounce out, versus if Rios was a guy who stayed at mid range and boxed.

Gamboa is used to sparring big giants as well, going back to Cuba to now. Most of his early career fights were at 130 or above so it's not that huge of a stretch.

Height is the only real issue but again speed & footwork can take that advantage away real quick.

The bold is a particularly good point. From what I understand, Cuban national team members spar one another, regardless of weight-class. This means that Gamboa might've sparred, say, Odlanier Solis, a heavyweight. (I don't know how accurate this is; it's something I remember reading in a book on Cuban sports.) This could be a big reason why Yuri has challenged a much bigger man, two weight classes above him. He's not intimidated by size.

Natas I was talking about Gamboa and his lack of reach and height.... Not the only reason but I think it played a significant factor in the success Acosta had vs Rios... On paper at least it looks like another disadvantage for Gamboa since he lacks in both areas....

Good point fellas..... But.... How many guys on the Cuban national team fight like Rios??? They all are pretty well versed in the fundamentals of boxing.... Rios goes against everything that the Cuban system teaches.... For lack of a better term Rios is going to try to get in Gamboas ****..... Even if he sparred Solis for example I think those type of sessions were more of a chess match then dealing with what Rios brings to the table..... Inside ability and pressure.... Not to mention headgear won't be involved....

In fairness there's a good chance he will be...

I personally don't love the fight for that reason. I don't think either guy will get full credit for winning. I can't imagine Rios making 135 healthy...I would love to be wrong, we'll see.

Rios now has the nutritionist of Sergio Martinez and Martinez walks around at 190. He'll be fine.

Does a fight have to be a brawl to be great? There are some intriguing challenges to both men, here. It will be interesting to see how they handle the fight, and whose game-plan wins out. Brandon is a warrior and Gamboa is too aggressive to "dance" all night. This fight will not disappoint.

I amped for the fight and think it'll be a great fight one way or another, don't get me wrong. I was just saying because I think many people are expecting a Chico vs JLC "war" and they may come out disappointed.
