I'm saying what Ali did and what Froch has done is different.
Ali made his predictions known to the world media, so it is seen more as a gimmick rather than being made behind closed doors, thus being sly. Ali might have carried some fighters until that certain round or decided to step on the gas when he entered that round. However, he never made that aspect known to the general public.
I'm not concerned as such with legality of what Froch has done, more so the difference between him and Ali.Comment

Compare the Ali-Froch discussion to the stock market.
If Best Buy comes out and tells people it is going to expand and id going to kill it's numbers in Q1 and a ton of people invest and come out big in the end, that is perfectly fine as people are trading on publicly known information.
However, if Best Buy secretly tells select people they are going to expand and kill it in Q1 then releases misinformation to the contrary to push their stock down and make the payoff even greater for those in the know... that's insider trading and is highly illegal.
What Ali did is more like the first scenario, Froch more like the 2nd.
I am a big Froch fan and an avid gambler on fights, I don't think what he did is acceptable by industry standards.
What will save him here is that the sporting world always wants to keep it's distance from the betting game. They secretly love the interest it generates but don't want to talk about it because of the serious problem it creates for some people.
Likely this will get ignored for that reason.Comment

Prolonging a fight is not illegal nor is it fixing a fight the outcome of the fight is still the same boxers have been predicting the round the fight will end since forever this is not new.
If a fighter was to take a dive in a said round that's fixing a fight but if you are good enough to stop a fight in a certain round and want a few of your friends to profit from that I say fair play.
There is also a risk involved so its hardly cheating Froch said he could of got the guy out of there in 4 what if the guy recovered and stopped Froch in 5 or Froch wasn't able to land the same power shots as he did for the rest of the fight and it goes to decision.
Haye clearly did the same thing vs Harrison nothing new Froch is just being honest.Last edited by -Lowkey-; 02-20-2012, 10:47 AM.Comment

I agree, If Ali made a prediction and you bet against it then fool for you when it comes in.
Froch not telling the public, making them throw their cash on something that has no possibility of happening, then that is not on and it could be fraud if Froch mislead the public.Comment

What Froch has been doing is ****** and admitting it is even worse and if I had placed money of his fights and been screwed over then I'd be pissed off.
However from a legal standpoint he has done nothing wrong.
Gotta say these make sense auguements from both sides are a refreshing change from the usual Pac/May/your mother type arguements we get in here.Comment

I'm not sure what the legal standard is but it could potentially be fraud depending on the scope and any evidence to support it.
At the very least it wouldn't surprise me to see sportsbooks refuse to post odds for future Froch fights or specifically refuse to take round betting.
Might not seem like a big deal, but don't underestimate the power of betting to draw interest to a fight (and the lack thereof to draw it away).
For what it's worth i made a fortune on Froch during the Super 6 betting on all of his fights to go the distance.
I wonder if he had told people to bet as such on those fights.......Comment

Exactly, that why Froch better hope that he didn't give any interviews at the time of the fight, that indicate something other than a 5th round stoppage.
If he did, the law should deal with him.Comment

My point is it's a bit hypocritical to have a go at British fighters for carrying opponents for financial gain, when boxing in the USA is pretty corrupt tooComment
