Comments Thread For: Robert Garcia Discusses Rios vs. Gamboa Showdown

For the past few weeks there had been a definite buzz in the air inside of the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, California. One of Garcia’s prized pupils, former champion Brandon Rios, has been chomping at the bit for a possible showdown with Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa but while the enthusiasm was high from his end, the days went by without the fight becoming signed.

If Gamboa could translate his newfound weight into extra power, it's possible that he could rock and KO Rios with his speed and combinations. Gamboa is the better boxer between the two, but Rios is the more determined one.

Yes gamboa is the faster guy, even the better boxer, but that means jack. We all know that after 5 rounds Gamboa slows down, loses power and ties up a lot and thats exactly where Rios is most dangerous at close quarters. Rios wins by late stoppage. Great fight though.

It's sheer size vs ability in this one.

I'm going with Gamboa's speed and ability to win out.

I want Gamboa for this but I fear it's going to be Rios-Acosta II. I hope not.

This is exactly what I'm thinking. And that's why I've never known why this fight was even considered. I could be wrong, but it seems to me like Rios is just too big and strong for Gamboa. Rios had weight problems in his last fight, so that makes things a bit more interesting for this fight. However, if the weight isn't a problem this time (because of the nutritionist), then it's very hard for me to imagine Gamboa winning this thing. I just can't forget what Rios did to boxers like Peterson and Acosta
