Manny Steward cannot train anything but overly tall boxers. Every time he's tried, his student either loses or the leave him before they face any real competition.
Steward only knows how to train ONE WAY. He tries to make all of his fighters into tall fighters like Hearns or Lewis because it was those two fighters that got him a bit of fame as a trainer. Problem is, when all you have is a hammer everything begins to look like nails.
Look at what he did to Prince Naseem, Vivian Harris, Chad Dawson, Miguel Cotto ... he tried to make them into boring fighters who hide behind jabs and don't take chances until much later in the fight unless they are significantly taller and longer than their opponents like the Klitschko brothers.
It doesn't help his cause that he's been hired by HBO. Once anyone is hired by HBO, they push the HBO network agenda. Proof of this is that very seldom do any of the commentators disagree aside from Merchant .. who says random **** nowadays that confirms that he shouldn't even be on the broadcast.
Max Kellerman used to be a straight shooter. That's how he got to where he is. He had his own fanbase because he was something of a rebel who spoke his mind. Nowadays Kellerman has become just a mouthpiece.
All the HBO commentators are aside from Lederman.
It was disgraceful the way they insulted the intelligence of the viewers. They had the balls to send Kellerman out to give a speech about how fans didn't understand what they saw at ringside or on the PPV and HBO telecast. Bottles weren't thrown in the ring at Pacquiao because the masses thought he won fair and square.
Even Amir Khan on the Sky broadcast was heard stating that Pacquiao had lost, and that Manny should regroup and come back stronger than ever. When your fellow stablemate says that **** on broadcast for the world to hear, you know you've lost. Khan recanted later, but the damage had been done because his honest opinion was given in the heat of the moment.
The hypocrisy is nothing new.
I remember how ole George Foreman used to be an HBO mouthpiece. Every fight Oscar DelaHoya was in Foreman talked about him like he was literally made of gold and could do no wrong.
The day, however, came when Roy Jones fought John Ruiz, and Lampley and Merchant decided to attack and degrade Jones' bid for a portion of the HW title. It was one of the first times that I have ever seen a commentator not sound scripted. Foreman let them have it. Anyone remember?
Roy Jones, as a commentator, has often told his fellow commentators that they don't understand the game as they have never boxed. I loved it when he basically told them that "You can appreciate, but better not pontificate ... at least to him".
JMM stopped nearly every offensive strike that Manny Pacquiao attempted. You don't have to win a fight by knocking your opponent out. JMM shut Pacquiao down while getting his own offense off. Anyone saying differently has an agenda.
In the first two fights, I thought JMM did enough to win, but it was debatable. This third fight really was not. Pacquiao looked impotent, and the networks, Roach, Arum and Ariza have made every excuse under the sun from foot blisters to cramps to Nacho stabbing a voodoo doll with Pacquiao's likeness.
Go watch the fight again and then count the rounds that Pacquiao could have conceivably won. You may come up with 4 if you're honest.
Nice post, BushBaby.
