For the most part, only Mexicans and Pac haters felt that JMM was "robbed". The fact that JMM overcame expectations was a moral win. IMO, JMM fought better in the first two fights against Manny than the third. I think it was the fact he was such a huge underdog going into the third that caused most people to lose all objectivity when the fight wasn't a blowout. I've watched the third fight a few times. He just wasn't aggressive enough, especially down the stretch. Even the compubox stats didn't support him like it did for the two fights. So he deserved to lose. If there was one fight from the trilogy that could be given to JMM, it would be the second one because that fight was the closest.Last edited by adp023; 02-03-2012, 01:59 PM.Comment

Yeah. JMM, with all his skill and experience don't usually draw flies on his own. He has to beg for a Pac fight to make millions and regain some sense of popularity.
I'm a casual fan and I'll pay for this fight. But I don't think real boxing fans will pay for his fights unless his opponent is Pac or the duck.
;-)Where do I start lol. I'm pretty sure that boxing fans would appreciate this match-up more than the casual fan, seeing as how you said, "JMM can't draw flies on his own". Boxing fans know who Marquez is, the casual fan only knows him as Pacquiao's main foil (other than Floyd), and the guy who gives Pac a hard fight every time they meet in the ring. I'm sure that with the last fight, JMM has earned more casual fans than he had before. It also helps that Peterson's last fight was his biggest, so his fanbase has probably grown too. Now, JMM/Peterson might not be a main-event caliber fight, but if the under-card is good, people will buy. I'm sure there's been worst PPV main events, and undoubtedly, Marquez/Peterson will be a great fight. Both guys are well-rounded in their attack, with Marquez preferring to throw 3-5 punch combinations from the outside and Peterson who likes to fight on the inside. It would be a great fight for all 12 rounds. It won't just be a technial fight, it would turn into a war eventually. Neither guy has a boring style, and both guys would be extra motivated knowing that their next fight could be the winner of Pacquiao/Bradley.Yep. Technical boxing alone won't make for an entertaining fight. Like all sports, it's business. Boxers nowadays can't just counterpunch their way to victories and expect to draw large crowds. You'll end up waiting for come-forward opponents to make you look good. You have to make it happen.

Can they sell out whatever stadium they fight in? That would depend on the ticket prices and the quality of the under-card. Even then, they might wind up giving away some tickets as well.Comment

I'll bet any of you that said Marquez don't draw big crowds he not only get 40K but surpasses 40K. let not forget when he fought Pacquiao the majority of the attendance were Mexicans. Same when he fought Mayweather a good 70 to 75 % were dinamitas supporters. I put it to you this way Pacquiao joshue Clottey what was the Pay per view sales? 750K? Pacquiao Mosley 1.1 million pay per view.......now paquiao vs Marquez one and one half million sales same with Mayweather with Marquez selling the most tickets at the gate.Yeah. JMM, with all his skill and experience don't usually draw flies on his own. He has to beg for a Pac fight to make millions and regain some sense of popularity.

Conclusion in order for any fighter to really sell well promoters haveto stack the card with Mexican fighters.

Yes! And neither guy would do Khan's version of the Moonwalk as well.Comment

I don't even know what to make of this post. This is just reinforcing what I've posted previously -- JMM alone can't draw crowds by himself despite his technical abilities and experience in the sport. As you said, "40k is a big stretch". You have to explain the reason for that. You're the 1st person I've ever seen admit to be a "casual" boxing fan. However, to take the time and post lucid comments on a channel like B-Scene (versus the micky mouse forums like ESPN et al) makes you a die-hard in my book. Large Hispanic pop in Dallas/FW area so JMM should do well, but I think 40k is a big stretch. Jerry Jones probably gave Arum some kind of corporate buy assurance similar to how they do it in the NFL to avoid blackout games...and then turn around thousands of these tickets for less than $50 a pop to artificially increase attendance. Still 40k seems to be a pipe dream unless that undercard is LOADED.

"...surpasses 40k"? Do you really believe that? That is a huge number when referring to boxing attendance especially when the two guys in the main event are not fully mainstream, household names like a Pacquiao that can plug fights on Kimmel, Leno etc. If JMM had gotten the W in his last fight, then maybe...but his opponent is still only an East Coast attraction in large part (from a casual standpoint). Unless Jerry Jones and Arum get real (and I mean real) creative with the tickets like practically giving 10-15k away, I can't see how this fight does anymore than ~25k. Think about it: The way to really sell this fight is to say, "Come out and see the guy that beat Pacman 3 times" yada yada. But because this is Arum's gig and Pac is still Arum's cash cow, there will be no piggy-backing off of Pacman, the latter whom put 50k+ a$$es in the seats in JerryWorld (cuz last thing Arum wants to do is piss off Team Pac). So you're left with a promo banner that will strictly be off of JMM as the headliner with no tie-in to Pac, and I just don't see how this is going north of 40k.
