sometimes a fighter can have a fight that takes so much out of him hes never the same again.
it can be physical or mental, in cottos case its mental. hes still as skilled obviously, hes still as strong and fast but he doesnt have the heart he used to. and for a fighter who gets hit so much and relied heavily on his determination to make it through alot of his fights thats all but a death sentence.
fighters can mentally break bcuz of a bad beating, or by having their will broken. ill make one example of each. meldrick taylor took such a bad beating against chavez he was never the same again, physicly he was still the same but mentally he left part of himself in that ring. another example if acelino freitas, freitas was a warrior similar to cotto in his prime. but one night against diego corrales he reached his breaking point and quit. his will was broken and bcuz he quit once it was easier for him to return to that and he was never the same warrior again and went on to quit much easier in other fights.
both these things happened to cotto against margarito, he took a bad beating and he quit and was never the same again. ppl say theres no shame in losing to pacquiao which is true, but look at HOW he lost. look at how little it took for his confidence to shatter and his will to break. he was doing well early, but the very first time in the fight he got in trouble he gave up. thats not the cotto of old. look at his eyes after he got dropped the second time, he doesnt want to fight anymore, a single punch made him accept defeat.
thats not the cotto who was down and badly hurt against torres, who was out on his feet against corley, who was put on ***** street by judah or got his teeth knocked back 2 inches by bailey. look at his eyes after hes hurt by their punches, no surrender. look at his eyes after pacquiao hurt him.. its two completely diffrent fighters.
physicly cotto still has alot in the tank, but hes mentally shot. and for a fighter whos heart was once his greatest attribute you have to say hes washed up. he doesnt have the same will to win, hes not the same animal that would walk through hell if there was the slightest chance he could come out on top.
This is what the majority in this forum say everytime a boxer loses....hes shot hes shot....no all boxers lose at one point in there carrier that dont they're shot that just mean they met there match
...boxers that never lost are boxers that ether they retired to early or just didnt challenge the top notch fighter in there division..i believe shot is a fighter like roy jones jr or evander holyfield james toney another boxers that cant compete at a high level the way they used to....cotto is not shot at all and im not even a cotto fan but i gotta call it like i see it...and it has nothing to do with being old cause look at hopkins hes beating guys he mite of lost in his younger days...hopkins much more smarter now went he was young....
I wrote about this yesterday to someone. I said: Cotto has proved to me in his last couple of fights that he's not shot. He may not be the old Cotto or great but he's still a solid fighter. He might cant beat the elite of the elite but he's a threat to anyone underneath that level. Anyone not named Sergio, Pac, Floyd
The only reason the fight of Miguel vs Joshua went the distance was due to the headbutt that resulted into the massive cut over Cotto's eye and certantly had an impact imparing Cotto's vision and seeing Clottey's right hand coming at him. That is the only reason. Cotto was completely dominating the fight before the headbutt. I dont know why pepole talk so much smack about this. No cut and Miguel dominates and winds decisively.
This cut created scar tissue and this is much more prone to re-opening even with mild blows. The cut sustained by Cotto was huge and deep. Not too mention, his tissue was still recuperating from crushing (the most damaging form of tissue damage with streching being the second) when he was hit with Margarito's plastered wraps. From there, the tissue around his face swells, brusses and cuts re-open with less punishment.
That happens here is that Miguel is one strongly hated boxer. Not sure if is due to he being Puertorican or what the fugg but man he is likely top 2 P4P most hated boxer on this site. I mean, it may not be hate but envy? Some folks (specially FJMr. fans) really hate on him.
To close out, there were many factors or distractors (like the death of his father, family problems, no training/lack of corner, etc) that effected Miguel performance leading from the Margarito fight and "hopefully" ending with the second Margarito fight.
I belive that Miguel is on the way of his second wind, and has not peaked there. He may not be the young-bull Miguel Cotto, but he is a more refined, smarter boxer, Miguel Cotto. If Miguel can continue to improve on the stamina he has big chances against fighters like Floyd, Pac and Sergio.
I mean, when I watch Cotto, he still looks impressive in his fights. I don't see any signs of slowing down. Yeah, sure he hasn't fought anyone noteworthy the past 2 years, but he dominated them like he was supposed to. I mean he had trouble with Clottey (maybe even lost), but I would never think Antonio Margarito is a better fighter than Sergio Martinez, or Ken Norton is a better fighter than Muhammed Ali. And his only 2 losses were against one of the best, and a cheater. So I don't get it. How is Cotto shot? He still looks good to me.
He's not.
Is he in his prime?
Probably not, but anybody beats Cotto (assuming no catchweight or other BS circumstances) still gets credit for a big win in my book.

I like your post. Unbias, clean and with some good key points. Green K!
how can you judge the outcome of a cotto vs mayweather fight based on the cotto vs pacquiao fight when marquez fought mayweather and lost every round but every time he fights pacquiao he gives him hell, cotto deserves an opportunity to measure his skill with mayweather just as much as pacquiao does and i believe cotto will put on a good show as he always does, and how can anyone say cotto ishot clearly is hatting on him he has only two loses and he is a holding a world tittle.shot fighters are fighters who can't win fights cotto is still pfp the best at 154

You make some good points, but your conclusion is bullshlt.
Was Barrera shot when he changed his style? He had no heart because he didn't stand toe to toe w/Hamed?
He got his ass kicked and decided that he wanted to prolong his career so he brawled less.
