I think Canelo is an easier fight for Cotto than Chavez jr.

I think Canelo has pop and even if he doesn't the forcefullness of his shots command that his opponents treat him with respect. He's not overrated at all IMO.Comment

i agree...i would rather see a cotto-canelo fight than cotto-chavez jr because cotto doesn't need to move up. chavez's physical advantages is just too much.
but then with canelo being a gbp fighter, arum is not likely to put cotto against him unless cotto decides to bolt out of top rank.Comment

First of all I don't think he's a fine boxer. He has improved and now has more physical attributes that help him, but he's still limited as a boxer. His main advantage is his height (6' 0'') and weight (180 pounds on fight night), and he has faced crappy opposition. His best opponent was Zbik who was 165 on fight night and had no punching power, and IMO Zbik won that fight by a small margin. Still I do believe that Cotto would have a lot of problems with Chavez Jr since he's faster than the actual Margarito, and he's also taller and stronger (at least right now). Also he would out weight Cotto for 15 or 20 pounds, so I don't think Cotto would be able to hurt Jr, but Jr would have the power to hurt Cotto. Still IMO it would be a close fight, since Cotto is a much better boxer than Jr, but the size of Jr would be a great advantage for him.Chavez jr has improved a lot over the years whether people want to recognize it or not. He's turned out to be a fine boxer. Besides that, the obvious hurdle for Cotto is Chavez' size. He's 6′0 with a 73″ reach. Plus he typically rehydrates 15 pounds or so.
Canelo on the other hand isn't nearly as tall and rangy as Chavez and imo his chin is still suspect, I still recall the smaller Jose Cotto putting Canelo on ***** street and making him hold on for dear life for a round or so. Of course, that was a couple years ago and Canelo has also improved since then, but still the question remains how he'll take a punch from a really good fighter.
I'm not saying Cotto would blow away Canelo, but after thinking about it I'd like my chances more versus Chavez.
Thoughts?
About Canelo I still don't know anything about him, and by that I mean that I've seen all his fights since 2009 and I thought the kid had more potential than Chavez Jr, but he's been fighting crappy opposition and his best opponent to date is Alfonso Gomez or a clearly shot Cintron. He was hurt against Cotto and his main problem is that he gets tired pretty quickly in his fights. Until I get to see him against decent opposition I think that Cotto beats this guy.Comment

Cotto needs to establish his punches on Alvarez. Who has the more wonderful defence? That will be the key to this match.Comment
