I agree, I thought the fight was very VERY competitive all around, with maybe Ortiz even winning a round. I want to say that because Mayweather was getting hit more than usual that he's lost a step, but as we've seen before he can be a slow starter at times to get a feel for his opponents before really cutting loose, so that's the only factor that makes me scratch my head.

good post! yes that on the ropes theory is played out, that style will never beat floyd! it takes a good jab and some size! people see another professional fighter land a few good shots on floyd and act like its the end of the world, i wonder do they forget these guys do this for a living and getting hit is apart of the game??? lolI'm a Floyd fan and a Pac fan. I think that Floyd could be beat, but I just don't think Pac is the one to do it. People act like pressure is the key to getting to Floyd...but it's really pressure with an educated jab. Running up on Floyd will get you knocked out. The one thing Floyd has working in his favor is that people tend to think he doesn't hit hard. That "just walk him down and get him on the ropes" strategy is for the birds. And if we're judging just off of what each fighter brings to the table, Floyd's timing, angles, range, and defense will be too much for Pac. That doesn't mean Pac isn't great, but his style is all wrong to beat Floyd. I actually think it'll be a rather easy night for Floyd. But then again....that's why they lace 'em up. I just hope Arum doesn't screw this up.Comment

it is a fact but its often used as an excuse, how can you in one sense brag that your man isnt fighting at any catchweights then turn around and say well he was out weighed on the night of the fight? thats what happens when a fighter re hydrates and it should not be used as an excuse to justify why the performance wasnt as good as it could have beenComment

Floyd and Manny are both not prime anymore. I say Floyd's prime was 2001-2007 and Manny's was 2002-2009. They are both past prime, but still really good. Leonard and Hagler weren't in their prime when they fought, but they were still both really good, and two of the top fighters in the world.
Ali was prime from 64-67, and past prime-still good from 70-75. After 75', Ali was way past his prime, and not even that good anymore. I still think Floyd and Manny are really good, but by the time late 2013/early 2014 comes around, if they aren't retired, I think they will both be past their primes and not even that good anymore. It just happens. However, right now, they are still the top two fighters in the world and really good.Comment

i understand what you are saying, i just think we dont know how floyds performance really was seeing that hes a strategist and adjust around the 5th round and the fight ended prematurely... i had no idea people were using that as an excuse... however when other fighters fight bigger fighters its always praised. so.... maybe they want the same for floydit is a fact but its often used as an excuse, how can you in one sense brag that your man isnt fighting at any catchweights then turn around and say well he was out weighed on the night of the fight? thats what happens when a fighter re hydrates and it should not be used as an excuse to justify why the performance wasnt as good as it could have been

From how Manny looked in 2009 to how he looked against Mosley, he lost a step slightly. He's not in his prime anymore, but he's still really good. When we saw how Floyd looked in 2007 against Hatton to how he looked in 2009 against Marquez, he lost a slight step. He wasn't prime anymore, but he was still great. Now, 2 years after his fight with Marquez, I think Floyd lost a slight step again, but he's still really good. Floyd and Manny's weight never matched up when they were both in their primes, so we never would have even had a chance of seeing them fight in their absolute prime. I still believe Floyd could have had another 1-2 prime years if he hadn't retired after Hatton. 2008 and 2009 could have been prime years before he lost a slight step, but he has only himself to blame for that.
Leonard and Hagler weren't at the complete top of their game when they fought in 87', but they were still really good and two of the top fighters in the sport. I think Floyd at this point in his career is where Ali was in 72' or 73', or where Leonard was in 87'-88'. He still has a couple years left of good/great fighting, and he's not quite as good as he was in his prime, but if he sticks around beyond another couple years, it will get ugly and his skills will deteriorate. I think Manny is where Hagler was in 86'-87', not quite his prime like he was a couple years earlier, but still really good.
If Mayweather-Pacquiao happens, it needs to in 2012 or Spring 2013 at the very latest. In late 2013, I see Floyd losing a bigger step and Manny losing another step. By 2014, neither will be as good as they are in 2011-2012.Comment
