Richard Schaefer: Hopkins-Dawkins PPV Buys 'Not Good'

How many were they honestly expecting? Hopkins V Pavlik did only 170,000 buys and that was mainly due to Pavlik fans. Hopkins has never had a big fan base and Dawson has no fan base(besides hardcores of course). I was expecting somewhere in the 75,000 range. Boxing is no longer a ppv sport in America(besides the two big names and the rare fight like cotto v marg).

I think that just about all of Hopkins' fan base posts in to BoxingScene.

GBP has no one to blame but themselves regarding Hopkins. He isn't a star and a Hopkins' PPV is a MAJOR risk on buying. You just don't know what type of performance you're going to get.

Well......I think that this this is the problem.. You DO know what kind of performance Hopkins is going to show. Any Hopkins fight, for many years, has been rotten to watch. That run of dirty, foul filled fights is typical Hopkins.

Shouldn't come as a surprise. I believe they sold around 3.5K tickets and had to comp over 4K tickets. Giving away more tickets than you actually sold is never a good thing for any promotion.

This was never anything more than an HBO fight, it was never PPV worthy. Golden Boy could have sold more tickets had they held the fight in Philadelphia or Atlantic City. They dropped the ball by having the fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in a predominately latin market.

Hopkins can keep fighting. But Golden Boy and Bernard himself have to realize that he is no longer a main event fighter or a draw. Bernard should be nothing more than an undercard fighter, or be content with fighting on HBO in smaller 2-4K venues.
