Richard Schaefer: Hopkins-Dawkins PPV Buys 'Not Good'

    danrafaelespn Dan Rafael
I asked Richard Schaefer today about Hopkins-Dawson PPV numbers. His answer was simply: "Not good." It likely did less than 100,000.

Rough year for GBP/HBO PPV. No wonder Oscar was talking comeback...

How many were they honestly expecting? Hopkins V Pavlik did only 170,000 buys and that was mainly due to Pavlik fans. Hopkins has never had a big fan base and Dawson has no fan base(besides hardcores of course). I was expecting somewhere in the 75,000 range. Boxing is no longer a ppv sport in America(besides the two big names and the rare fight like cotto v marg).

It would have done well on regular HBO. Even a PPV or like 25.00 a purchase. What did they expect in a down economy for 60.00 a buy?

Know whats worse? The little people that were loyal to the sport and bought the fight were treated to a horrific main event.

I just wish Hershman has as much success at HBO as he did at SHOWTIME, so hopefully nonsensical **** like this doesn't happen again. This fight had no business on PPV (or the Staples Center).

Based on his past, I speculate the quality of HBO is going to launch to the next level. One of the main criticisms of Greenburg and Davis, other than incompetence, is that their passion for the sport was non-existent. Instead of being genuinely interested in the undercard fighters and fights, they were part of the crowd that strolled in right before the main event.

From the quotes I've read from him and the fights and fighters he's showcased at Showitme, Hershman is actually a passionate about the sport. He had half of the budget HBO had, but his matchups were better.

Hershman on HBO is intriguing. Unlike Greenburg, he should be aware of the leverage HBO has over its competitors. I expect to see the best fights from 118 up to 175 with the occasional heavyweight fight, if the matchup is good enough.
