Hopkins-Allen 3. Bernard didn't want Cortez to be the ref, saying he was worried that Cortez would hold a grudge for throwing the PR flag to the floor. Perhaps to show that this wasn't the case, Cortez was way too hard on Allen when the fight took place.

Cortez also let Ike Quarey almost kill Carlos Bojorquez, in a fight where even Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage. Cortez finally decided to stop it with a minute left, although I suppose the corner deserves equal or more blame.

Cortez was solid many years ago, but I haven't liked him for awhile.

I knew he was incompitent when he let Floyd give Hatton 50 elbows to the neck and face without a point deduction, only to turn around and deduct an immediate point from Hatton when Floyd stuck half his body out the ring and Hatton punched nothing but rope.
