  • Comments Thread For: Roach: Pacquiao Style Changes For Marquez's Jab

Trainer Freddie Roach is making small changes to the fighting style of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Roach is already training Pacquiao in the Philippines, as they get ready for the scheduled trilogy fight with IBF/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Roach is a little concerned with Marquez's jab and wants Pacquiao to understand just how crafty Marquez can be with that particular punch.

I agree with Roach. JMM is an underrated jabber.

      Total Jabs

      Landed: 525
      Thrown: 2,009

      26%

Misdirection by Roach, he knows damn well that Manny started countering jabs with DLH and mastered it by the time he fought Cotto:

What they really need to worry about and what they are actually working on is countering the straight right. It was in one of Pac's Baguio workout vids, he was smacking up the heavy bag, Roach stepped in and had him shift to his right when he (Roach) threw a right. let me see if I can find it:

        (about 2:10)

Anyway, just mental games from Freddie. They want to surprise JMM with their new tactic.

Roach, stop trying to get credit, you aint changing squat...when a boxers is near retirement you aint changing squat about their style. Only thing manny has improved on is his stamina and strength.

Cotto's stance is the reason Pacquiao successfully countered his jab consistently, Miguel minimizing his height

Nope, it was Manny's speed, timing, head movement/slipping, and footwork that made him counter Cotto's (and DLH, Margarito, etc) jab consistently. JMM's stance won't make a damn difference, not only will his jabs be countered by punishing straight lefts while being turned to his left, expect the same with his straight right attempts.

I seriously question anyone who claims to watch boxing intently but can't see the technical improvements Manny has made under Roach's tutelage over the years.

Also adds to the fact that Cotto's and Manny's reach are identical.

only a small percentage of people do that..most just look, not study the fight

Look at Cotto's fighting stance, he arcs forward, minimizing his height and making it much easier for his opponents to reach him. Now try doing that against a fighter who keeps his back straight, Wladimir, Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins etc etc. Funny thing is, I never degraded Manny's timing, head movement and all that other stuff you mentioned, all I'm saying is...Manny's success in countering the jab mostly came from Cotto's stance.
