Arturo Gatti is an H.B.O. creation as far as fighter rankings were concerned. I think he is an exciting fighter, a guy who is good for the sport....but he is not a good fighter.
I pretty much concur, however I think he's a good fighter, nothing more. There are a lot of good fighters, but not many great ones.
Great would only apply to someone who reached a pinnacle of achievement.
Well by your scale, Gatti for me is average.
But, I consider somebody like Camacho Jr average.
There are thousands of boxers out there, thats why I consider Gatti 'good' - by comparing him to the thousands of 'average to poor' ones.
Put it this way - I consider Gatti vastly over-rated by many people. Great for boxing & a warrior, but not elite. PBF's rating skyrocketed after fighting Gatti, undeservedly so.

He's a good fighter, not a great fighter. Calling him an average fighter would be saying he has a sub-par record, which he doesn't. The majority of his losses are to GREAT fighters.
One thing he has that most don't have...heart. Can't ever take that away =)
Gatti was never overrated by the masses. There are always those on the fringe who might overrate someone but that is not enough to say that a fighter is overrated in general.
Gatti was what he was. He was a decent boxer with good power and a decent chin who was able to do some pretty remarkable things with his toughness.
Gatti is a legend like Ward because of their fights, and Gatti moreso because of his many historic victories, which are historic for the WAY he won them. Gatti is one of the few who has achieved a lofty status despite fighting with more ******ity than skills.
