Greater Ring Intelligence: HOPKINS or mayweather?

I say Hopkins because he is the epitome of the throwback fighter. Not only does he continue his fundamentally sound boxing at the advanced age of 46 but he is the master of subterfuge and gamesmanship as well. Moreover, he implements every dirty and illegal tactic in the boxing rule book. He knows how to work a referee and apply this craft beautifully when necessary. For instance, when the ref isn't looking, he'll resort to throwing several low blows; Especially in the clinches and use subtle headbutts, as weapons in order to cause cuts, over his opponents eyes. The best part about it is he gets away with it. His cheating goes undetected. Additionally, he has this uncanny ability of selling injuries on fake fouls as well, in order to catch a breather in bouts; Such as were the cases in the Calzaghe and Jones' fights.Comment

Hopkins has a WAY better resume than Floyd. Look at how long he's been winning for and who he has done it against.
Floyd? He's too busy at strip clubs challenging police to fight, oh on "retirement" I mean.
Floyd has chosen not to live up to his potential. Reap the rewards sucker.Comment

What is the potential if 1st ballot HOf isn't enough? Best ever? Please explain.Comment

I would have to say Mayweather by far.
When was the last time Mayweather defeated an opponent via Grappling/Wrestling/Holding, Headbutts, or faking being hit by low blows?Comment

Remember when B-Hops lost those fights to Taylor and Calzaghe he was in his early 40s. Now while I mean no disrespect to Floyd or trying to detract anything away from his ring accomplishments but to be objective in this matter; Floyd has yet to reach the age of 40 and dominate guys who were considered p4p or nearly twenty years younger than himself as Hopkins has done in his career.Comment

some of the **** floyd does to his opponents after figuring them out is simply amazing and pretty much unparalelled. i dont think its fair to criticize him for his natural abilities. he has them and he uses them in junction with his major intelligence.Comment

I just don't see how anyone rates them that differently~
Look at what they are trying to accomplish in the ring each time they go out,
1 Both want to spoil the other guy, they go about it in different ways but both almost always get a guy off the plan that best serves them and onto whatever they want to do.
2 Both love to use range by being just out of range to get the other guy to make the first move. On top of that both know that the safe places are outside of range or inside range and both rarely linger in no mans land where so many fighters get caught nasty.
3 Both are unafraid to use dirty tactics, B-Hop is a little more known for this but Floyd does use his fair share
4 Both are artists with the straight right hand
5 Both are very much trying to beat their opponent mentally as opposed to physically
6 Both take a very minimum of risks
7 Both don't care if a fight is boring or not as long as they are winning or the fight is close enough to think they are winning.
I just don't see the real difference other than superficial stylistic differences, the pillars that both rest on are the same.Last edited by The Gambler1981; 08-17-2011, 11:44 AM.Comment
