think how slow the punch seems when you hold it in and how out of wack you feel ..even if your eyes are open when you swing while holding air in it feels like you have zero control over anything

but if you fluidly breath while popin out your shots you feel more in control

Fighters expelling air is a trained exercise to keep the body taking in air when fighting. Most people when they fight will hold their breathe while fighting, thus losing oxygen and the fuel needed to fight on strong. Thats why street fights will generally last 30 seconds to a minute, because the guys are out of breathe. By expelling that breathe of air with the shot the fighters body will then automatically draw air back in. Its about keeping the body fueled with oxygen.

I actually first found out about it when I read Eubank's autobiography, so JuyJuy will be pleased. But basically it was the notion that boxers should expel air when throwing a shot to avoid getting out of breath, or tired.

To a know-nothing like me, this would seem to defy all physical laws (you actually keep your wind by expelling air rather than breathing in when you exert yourself?), but Eubank said plenty of boxers make a noise when they throw for this purpose.

Since then I've noticed boxers doing it (most notably Roy Jones Jr. and Audley Harrison) and... er...

Okay, I've forgotten what the point of this thread was now. Sorry.

It helps you from getting out of breath I think. Thats what they stress in weightlifting. Exhale when you do the work. Example...While benching you exhale while pushing up and inhale while pulling down. Try doing it the other way around and you will be breathing hard when youre done. So I guess that the same for boxers.

Isn't it partly to do with rhythm as well? When training or sparring, fighters often listen to music with break beeps when their supposed to break. Most people will unconciously start doing everything to that beat, including punching, breathing, etc.

It's because blowing out keeps the rhythm. Well, for me at least, when i'm competing or training muay thai, i know tahts true for me. Most fighters will bounce to a certain beat that also coincides with breathing.
