Boxers expelling air when they throw a shot

Being an armchair spectator and not a real-life boxer this is something I didn't know about until recently.

I actually first found out about it when I read Eubank's autobiography, so JuyJuy will be pleased. But basically it was the notion that boxers should expel air when throwing a shot to avoid getting out of breath, or tired.

To a know-nothing like me, this would seem to defy all physical laws (you actually keep your wind by expelling air rather than breathing in when you exert yourself?), but Eubank said plenty of boxers make a noise when they throw for this purpose.

Since then I've noticed boxers doing it (most notably Roy Jones Jr. and Audley Harrison) and... er...

Okay, I've forgotten what the point of this thread was now. Sorry.

Yeah, I found that surprising when I saw Eubank showing this to someone on TV a while back.

your back anorak, thats good i always crack up when i see your avatars.i liked the mausser one the best. I always noticed fighters when they blow air while throwing a punch and i always thaught it was because if they get caught to the body it wont knock their air out.

It is like weight lifting I think: at the point of the hardest effort you need to put into the move, you have to breath out. Otherwise your lungs and your heart will get in trouble.

Sorry, difficult to explain for me. LOL

I think it's cause when the boxers try really hard to throw a good punch they grunt a little bit, kind of like tennis players i guess.

I don't know but I was always taught to expel air, I think it also makes more power ie. weightlifting your supposed to exhale when you lift the weight.

Grunting... yeah, you could add Glen Johnson and Joe Frazier to the list. Though Johnson only seems to do it when he gets tired, which is a bit of a giveaway to his opponents.

Jones Jr.: "Tssssssssss... tssssssssssssss..." (makes the sound of mach one punches)

                Audley: "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaa AAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

Ya that's exactally it. I was going to use weightlifting as an example to, but I was beat to it. Try holding your breath and jumping up and down, or sprinting/running. You'll get pretty uncomfortable really quickly.
