This fight was poorly marketed and promoted from the get go.
-The venue: Thomas & Mack Center. Why on earth did they have the fight there? I was there and at least 3,000-4,000 seats were empty, if not more. It's off the strip, not really far away, but the casual walk up fans aren't going to want to go off the strip to see the fight, too much hassle. There was also a lot of confusion from casual fans as to where this fight was taking place, lots of people thought it was being held at Caesars, when they found out it was at T & M off the strip they said forget about it.
Mandalay had Sumo wrestling all weekend so they couldn't host it, but I can't see why the MGM wouldn't want the fight, unless they had a concert going on that took the date anyway.
This fight lost money, you could tell by the box office at the arena. Even though there were plenty of cheap upper bowl seats empty and available, they refused to sell them on fight night. They would only let the walk up crowd purchase seats that cost $600 and up. That tells you they had trouble selling out and wanted to gouge the walk up crowd.
-TV: Showtime is a backwoods operation, always has been. If HBO had this fight it would have done the extra 100,000-150,000 PPV buys they needed to make money, and they would have had close to a sellout for the live gate.
HBO knows how to hype their fights. TV coverage is the most important medium for getting the word out to casual fans.
Hell, I had no clue tickets went on sale until that very day by accident, luckily read it on a message board a few hours before they went on sale, otherwise I would have had no clue to the sale date.
-Tickets: You couldn't buy tickets through ticketmaster, HUGE MISTAKE! tickets could only be purchased through UNLVtickets.com or through Caesars. Ticketmaster is the prime ticket broker in North America, people go to their web site to see what events are going on, this fight wasn't listed there and you couldn't buy tickets for it there.
All of these things factored into this fight not doing as well with the live gate and with the PPV numbers.
Bob Arum has been in this business for years, you would have thought he'd know all these factors would make this fight a more difficult sell than it should have been.
The one thing I can say is that they had one of the best merchandise booths I've ever seen at a fight.
Two different t-shirt designs, two different on-site posters (you never see posters for sale at fight anymore, but they had them), plus the usual hats and programs.
But the promoters of this fight (GSP and Top Rank) blew it in three areas.
