    Is Ortiz Underrated?

I always hear all this "Ortiz is being overrated after the Berto win" stuff, but i can't help but think that if Ortiz hadn't had that one KO loss to Maidana he may very well still be considered a top young up and coming champ.

    Thoughts?

and that's all it takes for people to turn on you. but that's boxing. you win some you lose some. he seems to be better for it now, & better than he's ever been.

I think Ortiz more than made up for Maidana by beating Berto. I also believe people are sleeping on him against Floyd. The man is young, prime & strong. He deserves some kind of respect. Fighters usually don't come up in weight as an underdog opponent & pull out victories over high ranking guys in their weight class.

It's not just the Maidana fight, it's what happened to his career after the Maidana fight. He didn't look impressive against anyone worthwhile again until the Berto fight. I'm not changing my mind on him without a lot more evidence. Berto is no where near enough.

I feel you bo, but you also prove my point. It took 1 loss for Ortiz to become an overrated hypejob to some, yet it's going to take more then one great performance for him to regain his status.

If everything was the same, including the lackluster performance against Peterson, but there was no KO loss to Maidana would he still need to prove himself to you after the Berto fight?

No not at all. Its almost like people forget how he looked against Cambell,Peterson and Maidana because of his win against the legendary Berto. He's a good fighter who came into his own at 147 at a time when the division was very weak as compared to past years.

Great performance the last time out so that is normally where most people will draw their opinions on Ortiz. As big as the breakdown was in the Maidana fight the knock is not all completely stemming from that fight alone. The bottom line is that he's only really looked good in 2 of his last 7 fights. Maybe he's turned it around with his last fight but that will remain to be seen.

Maybe the loss to Maidana and the draw to Peterson kicked him in the ass made him train harder. When everyone tells you that your the next big thing it can go to your head.

That's a hard question to answer, but assuming you just take the Maidana fight out and leave Campbell, Harris, and Peterson, I would feel the same. He looked dynamite against Vivian Harris, but come on. He didn't look so hot against Campbell and Peterson.

I'd still feel the same. I don't like people thinking Ortiz is some young, prime, monster who will rule the welterweight division based on the Berto fight. Ortiz was good, but he wasn't that good against Berto, and I never thought Berto was that good either. Ortiz more showed Berto was never on that level than he showed he was on an elite level himself.

To be fair, I don't want to come across like I don't like Ortiz. He's young, incredibly talented, and if he has the potential to be a very good fighter. People are just putting him at a level he hasn't proved himself to be at yet.

                    i'm just saying though

Ortiz does not not have a very impressive resume. Key fights are maidana, and berto. two out of 30+ fights do not a elite fighter make.

FLoyd pull this move against baldomir, "hey look this chump got a belt and that belt will legitimize a ppv event."

But the only problem is ortiz was considered the next goldenboy for a reason, and faltering once may have expedited his ascent into a level2 super saiyan.
