  • “How are you going to pay me $2.5 [million] to fight Gary Lockett in Atlantic City with 8,000 people?* $2.5 million, O.K., for a title fight against a low-name fighter.* How are you going to pay me $3 million to fight Bernard Hopkins with 9,000 people in the arena, O.K., for a non-title fight, and turn back around where there are going to be 20,000 people filling the arena and tell me that the money’s not there to give me $2.5 [million]?* You offer Mikkel Kessler $3 million.* You’re telling me $1 million is not there?* How does that happen...What they’re trying to do is cash out.* They’re saving the money.* They want to pay me $1.1 [million].* $3 million is there, but that’s what they’re cashing out on.* They’re going to say, ‘You know what?* We’re going to pocket $2 million.* He’s going to lose the fight, and we’re done with him.’* And that’s it.* That’s how it works.”

there is nothing presumptuous about what I state

every fight I have ever known knows what they are getting when they agree to a fight.

there are even bout sheet agreements that initially outline how much a fighter gets that get sent to commissions for their records

I am not sure about Ohio but most states have some type of system in place where fights are agreed upon with purses stated and sent to the commissions for record

      let's put this out there

if we are to believe his claims that he had no idea what he was getting then why in the world wouldn't we have heard this before? why wouldn't he state that he rarely knows how much he is getting or something to that effect

in fact, he knew EVERY OTHER PURSE for his past fights why all of sudden did he not know this one?

it's easy to sympathize with the fighter because more times than not they get screwed or do not get what we think is fair market value

in this case Pavlik is dead off

now before we go back and forth no I don't have firsthand knowledge in this particular case

but from my experience and from Kelly's own knowledge of past purses it does not pan out that he had no prior knowledge of what he was getting

      • Good contributions Eaner as always.

Is it possible that Pavlik tried to do what Mayorga did before the DLH fight?

How often will a main event fighter not sign the official contract until fight week?

I honestly believe this is more to do with the Bute fight than the 50k for this fight

if he is claiming he does not need the money then why the beef over a mere 50k? we all know Cunningham was brought in to give Pavlik a southpaw look and an entirely beatable guy heading into a Bute fight

          • Two sides to every story I hope Pavlik exposes Arum some more.

How many times have we heard a fighter/athlete say that he isn't reporting for training camp until his deal is done?

You don't start preparing for a fight not knowing what the terms of that fight are.

And if there was really no contract, then that wasn't merely a MONEY issue, it was also a FIGHT TERMS issue. Weight, gloves, ring size, rounds, etc, etc.

Most likely Kelly's contract for this type of fight is made between him and Top Rank (and maybe Showtime as a third party signature). I'm positive Cunningham's deal was already signed separately with Top Rank where I'm sure all fight terms were in Kelly's favor. Only for big/mega fights where parties are splitting revenue, there is one agreement.

Sure, you could blame Pavlik for blindly trusting his agent and promoter while preparing for his tune-up. In hindsight, I guess Kelly should've threatened to pull out if he didn't see a contract at least 2-3 weeks before the fight. But, I give him the benefit of the doubt because he trusted these people that he's had a long business relationship with.

Arum & Showtime keeping silent after Kelly's public remarks is VERY TELLING. If all Arum can say is "Kessler's deal is false" and nothing else, then that leads me to believe that Kelly's comments about the contract are accurate. Arum only saying that the "Kessler's deal is false" is a WEAK statement because Arum is NOT involved with Kessler in anyway!! So it's no different than you or I saying that Kessler's deal is true or false. Get it? And Kessler's team won't come forward and clear it up. Arum is a sly mofo!

              • Pavlik is old news a hasbeen soaked in the sorrows of his own demise whose skills have eroded quickly and his liver swollen to twice the size of pavlik's massive ego. Unable to sell tickets at home and insulted by a paltry 1.3 million dollar offer Pavlik choose to forgo a plunging career and dwindling fan base to maintain his insignificant life in Ohio as a uneducated tattoed nothing.
